This Journeyman level Network Specialist position supports the operations process in providing and maintaining service to new and existing customers by maintaining a working knowledge of computer systems, tools, equipment, and material necessary to install, maintain and repair the Network and Distribution underground system. The applicant should be familiar with the day-to-day operations and specifications of the distribution system. This position must be available to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends, or holidays, to perform work required during planned outages or emergency situations. The position must perform all duties in a safe manner and adhere to all Company safety rules and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Successful completion of the Network Electrician Apprentice development program at Duke Energy or has Journeyman level Network Specialist experience.
  • Ability to obtain qualification as Asbestos Level III Worker
  • Class A CDL or ability to obtain a Class A with a minimum of class B at time of hire.
  • Respirator Clearance
  • This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job.
  • Work schedule requires working various shifts as business needs arise
  • Position is subject to callouts and generally available at others times as needed, demonstrate the ability to work independently, and to work all hours as needed, day or night, weekends or holidays, and in all weather conditions to perform work required during planned and emergency outages.
  • Requires ability to travel and stay overnight to various locations and work extended hours to assist in major storm restoration.
  • Must reside within 40 minutes of assigned Operations Center within 90 days.
  • Ability to successfully complete the Construction and Skills Trade Test (CAST).
  • Ability to stand a minimum of 5-6 hours; may be on ground, in a bucket or on a line truck.
  • Ability to sit for a minimum of 2-3 hours; may be driving a truck or sitting in a manhole or an underground vault
  • Ability to move frequently to unload equipment and to install/maintain/repair equipment
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to push/pull weights up to 75 pounds
  • Ability to frequently climb ladders or use authorized equipment to reach various working heights.
  • Ability to frequently bend/stoop/squat
  • Ability to differentiate between colors (color vision)
  • Manual dexterity to operate small hand tools, turn small knobs, etc.

  • Military experience in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate proficiency with appropriate operating computer systems, tools, equipment (e.g. Dynatel fault finder, Von Thumper & Von First Response Unit, etc.), and vehicles (e.g. backhoe, digger derrick, etc.).
  • Troubleshoot, locate, ground and repair underground cables and re-energize equipment after repairs have been made. This includes all types of underground cables, including primary, secondary and streetlight cables.
  • Assist in constructing, maintaining, and operating the Network System, including work on equipment such as Network protectors, Molimiters, submersible transformers and other network specific equipment.
  • Must have working knowledge of related construction specifications and applicable OSHA regulations (trenching, excavating, confined spaces).
  • Repair or replace pad mounted equipment (e.g. PMHs, single/three phase pad mounted transformers, pedestals, enclosures, etc.).
  • Assist in the termination of underground conductors in new underground facilities (e.g. PMHs, single/three phase pad-mounted transformers, pedestals, troughs, CT cabinets, etc.) and energize equipment.
  • Demonstrate proficiency with and understand the electrical distribution system by completing applicable L&S modules as outlined on the attached sheet.
  • Demonstrate behaviors and interpersonal skills necessary to obtain support and accomplish defined goals.
  • Maintain an awareness of costs and operate within Company Guidelines, Policies, Specifications and Procedures.
  • Know, adhere to, and promote personal and work group safety practices to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Able to perform emergency rescue and support CPR efforts for fellow workers once certified.
  • Able to deal with changing priorities or differing situations encountered in the work environment.
  • Able to exercise independent judgment and discretion as to the appropriate manner of handling a variety of situations.
