Position Overview Reporting to the Director of Infrastructure Services, the Network Technician serves as the primary on-site responder for the physical health and connectivity of our campus network. This is a highly mobile, hands-on role focused on the installation, diagnostic repair, and proactive maintenance of LAN switching, wireless systems, VOIP/telecommunications hardware, and security equipment. As the "face" of infrastructure support, you will spend the majority of your time in the field, ensuring our physical backbone remains resilient, organized, and fully operational. You will work side-by-side with our Network Engineers, bridging the gap between high-level configuration and physical deployment. This includes serving as the primary technical lead for our off-campus residential portfolio, managing third-party ISP relationships and hardware for rented apartments to ensure seamless connectivity beyond the main campus. Requirements

  • Written and oral communications, problem-solving, and analytical ability typically acquired through attainment of a bachelor’s degree
  • Proficiency with network testing tools (e.g., Fluke testers, tone and probe kits) to certify cable runs and identify physical breaks.
  • Experience performing physical audits of hardware assets and maintaining an accurate real-time inventory of deployed vs. warehoused equipment.
  • Must have the ability to work with hand/power tools to mount new equipment from ladders/lifts.
  • Must have a solid understanding of TCP/IP, and basic understanding of Network Switching and Telephony Equipment.
  • Outstanding customer service skills; true commitment to providing solutions in a timely way
  • Ability to work quickly and thoroughly, prioritizing work based on urgency and demand
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain clean and organized network closets (IDFs/MDFs) using proper labeling, Velcro management, and patch panel organization.
  • Must maintain a mobile 'crash kit' of essential tools, spare patch cables, and replacement peripherals to ensure first-visit resolution of hardware issues.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the "first-responder" for all hardware failures and physical connectivity outages, delivering high-visibility, rapid resolution for both user-submitted tickets and automated system alerts.
  • Perform Layer 1 diagnostics to quickly isolate hardware malfunctions from configuration issues across LAN switching, wireless, and security systems
  • Proactively monitor and maintain the functionality of infrastructure endpoints, including IP Telephones (VOIP), IP cameras, and network switches, ensuring they remain online and fully operational.
  • Conduct routine physical inspections of IDF/MDF closets and hardware distribution points to ensure environmental standards are met (including temperature regulation, dust mitigation, and power redundancy)
  • Provide end user support over the phone or via remote sessions for connectivity issues including Wi-Fi, VPN, Softphone client, and similar clients.
  • Serve as the Primary Point of Contact for all off-campus student housing internet services; manage vendor relationships, schedule service calls, and coordinate with third-party ISPs for installations and repairs.
  • Install and/or rack mount and configure equipment related to infrastructure including Switches, Routers, UPS, gateways, cameras, wireless APs, IP phones.
  • Oversee the lifecycle of consumable parts and field equipment, ensuring that all necessary hardware is inventoried, tested, and staged for rapid replacement or project rollouts
  • Leverage mentorship from the Engineering team to develop, distribute, and troubleshoot scripts for network functions, increasing the efficiency of routine hardware deployments and monitoring
  • Uphold the physical integrity of the network through the expert termination, testing, and cross-wiring of CAT5e/6 runs, maintaining "clean-closet" standards for all distribution points.
  • Serve as the technical lead for remote site connectivity, diagnosing and resolving hardware or broadband issues for off-campus locations and specialized telephony setups.
  • Maintain visual and digital records of network closets (IDFs/MDFs), cable paths, and hardware configurations, ensuring the team has an accurate "source of truth" for the physical network.
  • Actively participate in departmental planning sessions and cross-train with Network Engineers to stay current on emerging infrastructure technologies and industry best practices.
  • Be an active participant in the life of the College by attending and supporting key events like Commencement, Homecoming, and other all-hands-on-deck gatherings.
  • Show a spirit of collaboration and community involvement, including volunteering when possible.
