We’re currently recruiting for a Network Engineer 3. The primary responsibilities for the job are to build and maintain top-tier networks, optimize and oversee network infrastructure, including switches, routers, Wi-Fi, and next generation firewalls. Maintaining security, efficiency, scalability, and resilience. Lead network projects, design and implement network architecture, and communicate key updates and solutions to the team. Monitor network performance and resolve issues to maintain optimal operation. This is a full-time, regular, non-union exempt. The schedule for this position is M-F, 8am to 5pm. Open until filled. Requirements

  • Five (5) years of related networking experience managing complex secure networks.
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Proficiency in network configuration, security, monitoring software, and skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Possession of: Valid driver’s license
  • Experience with installing and maintaining routers, layer 2 and 3 switching.
  • Experience with installing and maintaining next generation firewalls.
  • Experience with installing and maintaining controller-based Wi-Fi.
  • General project management and reporting principles.
  • Update technical documentation including topology maps and standards documents.
  • Experience with managing vendors and contractors.
  • Design, build, and maintain an expanding secure network.
  • Analyze and interpret key network performance statistics from monitoring software.
  • Communicate clearly, concisely, and in a balanced matter in verbal and written communications.
  • Prioritize critical vs. non-critical issues when dealing with multiple, overlapping tasks and/or issues.
  • Work both independently as well as in a team environment.
  • Work on-call on a rotational basis, with occasional evenings and/or weekends.
  • Work in a manner consistent with the City of Vancouver’s Operating Principles.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and monitor the City’s network hardware at multiple locations.
  • Assess network traffic and scale the network to ensure it meets organizational requirements.
  • Propose, test, configure, and deploy wired and wireless network equipment including switches, routers, gateways, access points, bridges etc. for data and telecom services.
  • Set up and manage firewalls, virtual private networks (VPNs), and other security measures.
  • Configure devices to meet the organization’s needs, including IP addressing, subnetting, and routing protocols (e.g., OSPF, BGP).
  • Design, implement, and manage network security measures to protect the organization’s network infrastructure from unauthorized access and cyber threats.
  • Resolve network outages, security breaches or other issues and provide root cause analysis.
  • Carry a cell phone and participate in a rotation schedule for on call, weekend, and after-hours work.
  • Work with other IT teams (system administrators, security teams, etc.) to align network infrastructure with overall business goals.
  • Remediate high-risk vulnerabilities and stay current with patches and upgrades that impact network devices and systems.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
