About The Position

The Network and Computer Systems Administrator Apprenticeship at IBM is a 12-month program designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in Linux systems administration and software development. This apprenticeship provides hands-on training and learning opportunities, allowing participants to develop essential skills in IT services, systems administration, and agile development methodologies. Graduates will receive a nationally-recognized credential from the Department of Labor and will be eligible to apply for full-time roles at IBM upon completion.

Requirements

  • Willingness to complete the requirements of the apprenticeship program.
  • Some knowledge or experience in one or more programming languages such as Java, JavaScript, PHP, C#, Objective-C, C/C++, Python, Ruby, or functional languages (Haskell, Scala, F#, Clojure).
  • Familiarity with Design Thinking and Agile principles.
  • Experience with container development using tools such as Docker or Vagrant under Linux.
  • Knowledge of DevOps automation and the development toolchain (e.g., Travis, Jenkins, Junit, automated test tools).
  • Experience in setting up and administering X86 systems.
  • Some exposure to hypervisors such as VMware or XEN.
  • Experience with a modern source code repository system such as GIT.

Responsibilities

  • Complete specific learning hours and on-the-job training as outlined in the apprenticeship program.
  • Learn and demonstrate new knowledge and competencies through hands-on application with project teams.
  • Participate in ongoing training and development focused on professional and technical skills.
  • Work collaboratively within a team environment to resolve customer issues and debug problems.
  • Gain knowledge of Linux System Administration, Source Control, and Build for Linux.
