About The Position

Towson University (TU) is one of the nation's top 100 public universities. The Network Administrator is responsible for the daily operation of the campus data network which includes, but is not limited to, the installation of new equipment, configuration of new equipment, troubleshooting connectivity problems, and managing the network engineering ticket queue. The Network Administrator will also participate in projects. The Network Administrator focuses on the maintenance, configuration, and operation of access layer network electronics. The Network Administrator's routine daily activities are focused on processing network service requests for field work but may also assist the telecom team with cable installation and/or repair as needed. Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience.
  • Experience and success with enterprise-level LAN configuration, troubleshooting and management.
  • Proven ability to install and configure Cisco switches.
  • Technical knowledge of network monitoring platforms such as Solarwinds Network Performance Manager.
  • Understanding of DNS, DHCP, IPAM and NTP.
  • Technical knowledge of network systems, protocols, and standards such as: TCP/IP, VTP, STP, VLANs.
  • Ability to manage Cisco networking configurations.
  • Proven experience of network hardware and software troubleshooting.

Responsibilities

  • Document the resolution to service requests in TechHelp.
  • Ensure that the network database is always correct, remove old entries, and ensure new devices appear in the network management systems.
  • Maintain software, configurations, and access layer hardware.
  • Carry out routine client-side field work including updating switch port VLAN assignments, performing restores from backups, and applying standard configuration templates.
  • Keep track of the number of free ports in each of the hub rooms and report changes to the Manager of Network Engineering.
  • Troubleshoot issues reported via the techhelp system and issues identified by the fault management systems.
  • Determine the root cause of access layer network failures and report complex issues to a manager or Network Engineer.
  • Keep current with new data network technologies and track developments in access layer electronics.
