About The Position

The Section of Neonatology in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Chicago provides specialized care for newborns with a multitude of complex diseases, seamless access to any specialty services needed, and the full complement of surgical approaches for newborns and infants. Our neonatologists and advanced practice providers, who not only work on the University of Chicago campus but also in community hospitals located in the Chicago suburbs and Indiana, give families access to excellent neonatal services from a multidisciplinary team with a strong history of innovation and family-focused care. The Advanced Practice Provider provides direct patient care, in collaboration with consulting physicians and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentials committee, to include identification, management, and/or referral of health problems. This position will work at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth in Bolingbrook and Hinsdale.

Requirements

• Minimum requirements include a college or university degree from an accredited school/college.
• Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through a combination of education and a minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience in a related job discipline.
• Current and/or eligible for State of Illinois licensure/registration required.
• Eligibility to be privileged and credentialed through the Medical Staff Office (MSO).

• Advanced nursing degree from an accredited school/college of nursing.
• Completion of approved NNP training.
• 2 years of clinical experience in a related area of specialty.
• NCC certification as a neonatal nurse practitioner.
• Ability to obtain Illinois advanced practice nurse license by start date.
• Current license as registered nurse.
• Once licensed, apply for a mid-level practitioner-controlled substance license and DEA number.
• Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation, and line placement.
• Proficiency in EPIC.
• Proficiency in use of computers.
• Excellent clinical, management, and organizational skills.
• Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments.
• Detail-oriented.
• Ability to work effectively under pressure.

• Willingness to enter into written collaborative agreement with collaboration physician upon hire.
• Ability to properly document and bill for services provided.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care and formulate plan of care in collaboration with physician, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team in accordance with privileges approved by the Credentials Committee.
• Communicate follow-up plan/disposition with the follow-up health care provider.
• Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol.
• Attend both high and low risk deliveries as needed.
• Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize a compromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, emergency room and referring hospitals as needed.
• Stabilize and transport patients as needed.
• Demonstrate in-depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts and issues related to practice.
• Identify educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate.
• Ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care.
• Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
• Participate in the development, review and evaluation of policies and procedures.
• Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring.
• Participate in providing in-service and outreach education program.
• Act as resource for clinical skills for staff on or of the unit.
• May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians.
• Serve as preceptor to APP students.
• Evaluates goals and outcomes taking into account the benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness for the patient, family and the organization.
• Develops diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s plan of care.
• Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults.
• Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.
• Performs other related work as needed.
