About The Position

Join the University of Chicago Medicine as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner for our NICU Department. The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner will be responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management and will manage a caseload of patients by exercising autonomous decision making in the assessment, diagnosis, and initiation of delegated medical treatments. The NP will provide healthcare and patient services that may include educational, research, and clinical support, as well as complete administrative activities under the direction and supervision of the Director/leadership. The NP has acquired the knowledge, skills, and judgment necessary to assist the physician through organized instruction and supervised practice. The Margaret M. and George A. Stephen Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Comer Children's Hospital is among the largest in the Midwest. Our NICU features 71 beds including a transitional care unit located close to our postpartum unit.

Requirements

  • Master's of Science in Nursing
  • Current and/or eligibility for State of Illinois RN and APN licensure/registration
  • Must be certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the ANCC or AANP
  • Must have or be able to qualify for Illinois and DEA prescribing numbers
  • Completion of approved NNP Training
  • NCC certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner
  • Ability to conduct physical examinations and health assessments
  • Being detail oriented
  • Be able to work effectively under pressure
  • Be able to use independent judgment
  • Strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication among various levels of practitioners
  • Ability to interview and obtain medical information
  • Willingness to enter into a written collaborative agreement with a collaboration physician upon hire
  • Be able to document and bill for services properly

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of clinical experience in a related specialty area
  • Proficiency in resuscitation, intubation, and line placement
  • Proficiency in EPIC
  • Proficiency in the use of computers
  • Excellent clinical, management, and organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care and formulate a plan of care in collaboration with the physician, nursing staff, and the multidisciplinary health team by privileges approved by the Credentials Committee.
  • Communicate follow-up plan/disposition with the follow-up health care provider.
  • Prescribe and evaluate pharmacological therapies according to protocol.
  • Attend both high and low-risk deliveries as needed.
  • Initiate CPR and perform therapeutic techniques to stabilize a compromised infant in the delivery room, NICU, and emergency room, and refer hospitals as needed.
  • Stabilize and transport patients as needed.
  • Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of current professional and legal trends, concepts, and issues related to practice.
  • Identify the educational needs of family members and assist with teaching as appropriate.
  • Ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place to maintain established standards of care.
  • Participate in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
  • Participate in developing, reviewing, and evaluating policies and procedures.
  • Participate in developing and implementing QI monitoring.
  • Participate in providing in-service and outreach education programs.
  • Act as a resource for clinical skills for staff on or off the unit.
  • May participate in clinical research projects conducted by supervising physicians.
  • Serve as a preceptor to APP students.
  • Evaluate goals and outcomes by considering the patient, family, and the organization's benefit-versus-burden, safety, quality, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic interventions needed to achieve the goals and outcomes of the patient’s care plan.
  • Has a deep understanding and response to adverse drug reactions, with special attention to vulnerable populations such as infants, children, pregnant and lactating women, or older adults. Develops and coordinates APP training and professional development activities.
  • Performs other related work as needed
