About The Position

The APP Fellowship in Neonatology at The University of Rochester Medical Center Level IV Regional Perinatal Center is a 12-month post-graduate specialty training and mentorship program for APPs – NPs and PAs. The program is 75% clinical and 25% didactic and includes side-by-side education with the UR Medicine Pediatric Residency and Neonatal Fellowship programs. The APP Fellowship includes a core program of neonatal medicine and also several specialty rotations meant to enhance neonatal provider education. The program also offers protected time throughout the fellowship to enrich the academic experience with participation in quality or research projects.

Requirements

  • Master's degree as a Nurse Practitioner, an active New York State Registered Nurse license in good standing, an active New York State Nurse Practitioner licensure in good standing and current national certification as an Nurse Practitioner.
  • Completion of an ARC-PA approved Physician Assistant program, an active New York State Physician Assistant licensure in good standing and current national certification as a Physician Assistant by NCCPA.
  • Demonstrate clinical competence, superior verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal effectiveness and customer relation skills, computer competence and must have an active desire to learn.

Responsibilities

  • Care for neonates in collaboration with Attending Neonatologists, other APPs and Residents while maintaining a high level of autonomy to achieve desired patient outcomes.
  • Completes daily patient evaluations and assessments.
  • Documents pertinent findings in patient record.
  • Orders and interprets radiographic, laboratory and other diagnostic tests.
  • Obtain medical history and performs comprehensive physical examinations.
  • Instructs and counsels patients and families in collaboration with other health team members.
  • Performs routine procedures and emergency procedures.
  • Serves as consultant to the birth center and newborn nursery covering provider.
  • Covers care of well newborns as needed.
  • Writes medication and other medical orders.
  • Coordination and management of discharges from the NICU in conjunction with Care Coordinators and Attending Neonatologist.
  • Provide education for NP and PA students, APP Fellows and residents on rotation in the NICU.
  • Involvement in QI or Research Track is required.
  • Presentations throughout fellowship that include – Journal Club, Case Presentations, QI or Research Presentation and Literature Review Presentation.
