We are currently seeking a highly skilled and motivated NEON IT Infrastructure Administrator - Data Engineer to join our team. This role offers the flexibility of remote work. The IT Infrastructure Administrator will play a critical part in supporting the NEON program by overseeing the design, implementation, optimization, and ongoing support of data collection, storage, and access systems. Operating with minimal supervision, the successful candidate will lead complex infrastructure initiatives, including system installations, upgrades, and modernization efforts. This position requires a strategic thinker who can evaluate business needs and objectives, analyze and organize raw data, and build robust data systems and pipelines. A key focus will be on enhancing data quality and ensuring efficient, scalable access to data across the organization.

  • Provides expert data analysis and modeling, and physical/logical design.
  • Performs complex data warehouse design.
  • Leads database development functions such as query optimization and schema design.
  • Leads database administration functions including backups, restores, maintenance, and security configuration.
  • Leads projects by actively engaging in initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, and closing projects.
  • Trains other IT staff members in best practices.
  • Contributes to the development of procedures and standards for database development.
  • Identifies ways to improve data reliability, efficiency, and quality.
  • Prepares data for predictive and prescriptive modeling.
  • Assists with database integration into other applications and infrastructure components.
  • Performs needs assessment and evaluates new technology to improve and maintain core and enterprise infrastructure.
  • Engages external vendors when needed to solve complex problems or bugs.
  • Provides occasional after-hours support.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with 8 years of experience as a Data Engineer/Data Analyst/Database Administrator or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Experience with database environments including PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with Trino query engine.
  • Experience with Apache Hive data warehouse software.
  • Experience with programming languages (Python, Java).
  • Experience with Git and CI/CD practices.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues with databases and software.
  • Ability to effectively document all technical designs and solutions.
  • Experience with automation.
  • Experience working in Google Cloud environment including CloudSQL and GKE.
  • Experience working with MySQL, Microsoft SQL, and Oracle databases.
  • Experience working in a scientific environment.
