About The Position

Battelle is seeking a NEON Field Ecology Intern for the Summer of 2025, located in Manhattan, KS. This internship is part of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), a continental-scale observation facility funded by the National Science Foundation. The NEON program aims to collect long-term, open access ecological data to understand how U.S. ecosystems are changing. Interns will play a crucial role in collecting observational data and samples, monitoring automated systems, and operating airborne observation platforms that capture remote sensing data. The work environment is dynamic, with variable schedules and a mix of field and lab duties, where interns will gain hands-on experience in ecology and environmental science. Interns will be involved in seasonal and periodic sampling of physical, chemical, and biological data at various field sites. They will follow established protocols for sample collection, record data using handheld devices, and navigate to sampling locations. The role requires good judgment and decision-making abilities, as well as adherence to safety policies and procedures. Interns will also assist with administrative duties and special projects as assigned. This position offers a unique opportunity to study the impact of agriculture and land management practices on tallgrass prairie ecosystems, contributing to the understanding of ecological changes in the region. The internship is designed to provide a comprehensive learning experience, allowing interns to work independently and as part of a team. They will be expected to demonstrate problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively. The role may involve exposure to various environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures and rough terrain, and requires physical stamina for fieldwork. Overall, this internship is an excellent opportunity for students pursuing a career in ecology or related fields to gain valuable experience and contribute to meaningful scientific research.
