About The Position

Battelle is seeking a NEON Field Ecology Intern for the Summer of 2025, located in Hilo, HI. This internship is part of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), a continental-scale observation facility funded by the National Science Foundation. The NEON program aims to collect long-term, open access ecological data to understand how U.S. ecosystems are changing. The intern will play a crucial role in collecting observational data and samples, monitoring automated systems, and operating airborne observation platforms that capture remote sensing data of regional landscapes and vegetation. The Hilo location encompasses all Hawaiian Islands and features a diverse native Hawaiian forest, providing a unique opportunity for fieldwork in a tropical climate. Interns will engage in hands-on learning and exciting projects, contributing to the collection of physical, chemical, and biological data at various field sites. The work schedule is dynamic, with variable hours that may include long days and weekends, and the intern will be expected to perform field assignments in diverse conditions. The role requires following established protocols for sample collection, recording data, navigating to field sites, and reporting activities. Interns will also assist with administrative duties and special projects as assigned. This internship is designed to provide valuable experience in ecology and environmental science, allowing interns to develop skills in data collection, problem-solving, and teamwork. The position requires a valid U.S. driver's license and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. The intern will be expected to demonstrate good judgment in identifying and mitigating hazards in the field, and to maintain a high level of attention to detail and accuracy in their work.
