Battelle is seeking a NEON Field Ecology Intern for the Summer of 2025, located in Fresno, CA. This internship is part of the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), a continental-scale observation facility funded by the National Science Foundation. The NEON program aims to collect long-term, open access ecological data to understand how U.S. ecosystems are changing. Interns will play a crucial role in collecting observational data and samples, monitoring automated systems, and operating airborne observation platforms to capture remote sensing data of regional landscapes and vegetation. The work environment is dynamic, with variable schedules and a mix of field and lab duties, primarily focused on ecological data collection across diverse biomes in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Interns will be responsible for performing seasonal and periodic sampling of physical, chemical, and biological data at various field sites. They will follow established protocols for sample collection, record data using handheld devices, and navigate to sampling locations. The role requires good judgment and decision-making abilities, as well as adherence to safety policies and procedures. Interns will also assist with administrative duties and special projects as assigned. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in ecology and environmental science while contributing to important research efforts.
