About The Position

The Neon Bending Specialist plays a critical role in delivering high-quality, engaging educational programs for K–12 students and community members participating in The Neon Museum’s Glow on the Go outreach program. This position offers a flexible schedule of 30-40 hours per week and is therefore recognized as full-time and fully eligible for benefits and retirement plan. The Neon Bending Specialist focuses primarily on demonstrating the entire neon bending, processing, and installation procedure in our mobile neon bending studio. The role also manages the studio, ensuring that supplies are organized, workspaces are clean, and safety protocols are strictly adhered to. Additionally, the Neon Bending Specialist provides internal training for TNM team members so that they can confidently and accurately speak about the process and science of neon bending. The ideal candidate has experience creating neon signage in an artistic, educational, or commercial setting. They will be familiar with the science behind neon lights, experienced in bending letters as well as shapes, and excited to share their knowledge and expertise with both youth and adult audiences. MUST include 2-5 work samples with your resume that reflect your early neon work as well as a more recent piece.

Requirements

  • 2+ years of consistent bending in an artistic, educational, or commercial setting.
  • Proficiency in bending, especially letters, processing/bombardment, and installation.
  • A solid understanding of the science behind the neon bending process, including properties of gas, reasoning for each step of the process, and electrical engineering concepts.
  • Demonstrated strict adherence to protocols when working with open flames, high heat, and high-voltage equipment.
  • Demonstrated customer service mindset and ability to work positively with youth, families, and educators.
  • Versatility, flexibility, and the ability to remain calm and focused in dynamic, public-facing settings.
  • Must successfully pass a background check.
  • Valid driver's license and access to a vehicle required.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate the complete neon bending procedure—design, bending, processing, and installation—to students and members of the general public.
  • Design – be familiar with drafting techniques to prepare patterns for custom abbreviation signs for each school visit.
  • Bending – use burners and tools to properly demonstrate types of neon bends and create a final product.
  • Processing – Add electrodes and fill the completed tubing with neon or argon gas, then bombard the unit.
  • Installation – connect wiring and create a simple mounting system for the custom sign.
  • Interact with participants and answer their questions in a friendly and clear manner.
  • Ensure safety in and around the mobile bending studio, strictly adhering to safety procedures while monitoring and escalating potential risks.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and well-organized studio, ensuring that supplies are replenished and the studio is fully prepared for each Glow on the Go outing.
  • Provide training on the science and process of neon bending for TNM staff, ensuring they can speak confidently and accurately when engaging with the public.
  • Travel up to 90 miles in a personal vehicle or carpool with other TNM staff to provide learning opportunities for schools and communities across Clark County.
  • Collaborate with team to ensure proper staffing for all Glow on the Go school visits, museum activations, and community outreach events.
  • Support setup and breakdown for student and family education activities.
  • Assist with the administrative tasks, including tracking, evaluation, and printing.
  • Help organize and inventory education program supplies.
  • Adhere to departmental and organizational policies and procedures.
