About The Position

The Nearshore Natural Resource Scientist 1 (NRSci1) position at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) in Olympia, WA, focuses on conducting kelp and eelgrass research within the Nearshore Habitat Program. The role involves both independent and collaborative work with a team of scientists and data analysts to monitor marine vegetation, collect and analyze field data, and contribute to habitat monitoring efforts in Puget Sound. The position is essential for providing baseline information on marine habitats to inform policy and management decisions.

Requirements

• A bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, ecology or related natural science, AND two years of professional experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and or experience.
• Experience of field and laboratory-based data collection and processing.
• Ability to process scientific data according to defined procedures.
• Working knowledge of data analysis principles and basic statistics.
• Ability to create, manipulate, and QC data sets using Excel, Access or R.
• Ability to summarize procedures and scientific findings in written and oral format.

Nice To Haves

• Experience identifying and distinguishing marine vegetation found in Puget Sound, especially kelp and eelgrass.
• Small boat experience & safety training.
• Certification such as the WA State Boater Education Card, and Motorboat Operator's Certification Course (MOCC).
• Knowledge of ArcGIS software.
• Experience in marine/estuarine ecological research and literature especially with kelp, eelgrass, or other marine vegetation.
• Familiarity with environmental monitoring equipment, particularly water quality sensors.

Responsibilities

• Participate in kelp and seagrass research throughout Puget Sound.
• Collect and classify video data for presence/absence and/or cover of marine vegetation and frequency of specified marine organisms.
• Assist in the production and review of program deliverables: reports, peer-reviewed papers, presentations, maps, etc.
• Prepare samples in a laboratory setting following established protocols.
• Work collaboratively with peers to maintain water quality sensor instrumentation for deployment.
