About The Position

Raytheon is seeking a Meteorological Systems Engineer to support NOAA's Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System (AWIPS) program in College Park, MD, to work with cutting-edge technology as a provider to the National Weather Service. It is the corner-stone of a multi-year modernization program allowing revolutionary improvements to the National Weather Service (NWS) products and services. It is a high visibility program of great importance to the United States government and to the Nation. The program is a technological wonder that consists of a nationwide network of approximately 160 sophisticated data collection and processing National Weather Service sites. The sites are linked with a state-of-the-art communications system so that the meteorologist and hydrologists are prepared to provide the most accurate forecasts in the quickest time possible. Candidates with strong experience with proprietary weather systems and LINUX background are needed to support the monitor and control functions of the NWS Network Control Facility (NCF). The NCF is a 24x7x365 facility providing Help Desk Type Support and Network Operations support to the Weather Forecast Offices, NWS National Centers, and River Forecast Centers. The ideal candidate will be a highly enthusiastic team member excited about providing front line customer support for an operational system. In this position the candidate will have the opportunity to directly support the customer in troubleshooting this critical system.

Requirements

  • Must hold, at a minimum, a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Meteorology or a closely related Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) field by the start of summer 2026.
  • This position requires 12 months or less of professional experience (excluding internships)
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access certain necessary systems.

  • Ability to apply critical thinking toward problem solving in time-critical situations
  • Works effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to work a flexible shift schedule including day, evening/nights and weekends (12 hour shifts: 4 days working, 4 days off rotation) with occasional presence in the office (about once per week)

Responsibilities

  • Correct site processes and interface system issues, wide area network (WAN) problems and satellite broadcast problems.
  • Independently detect and troubleshoot failures
  • Interact with forecast office personnel and third party vendors for site support
  • Accurately document all actions taken and provide customer feedback.
  • Build and/or implement a daily operations plan using complex software and hardware systems
  • Obtain/maintain technical knowledge of a large repository of formal procedures with the responsibility to accurately select and apply the correct procedure(s) depending on the specific scenario at hand
  • Obtain/apply technical knowledge on various hardware subsystems
  • Document discrepancies as they occur.
  • Implement workarounds and contingency plans to minimize impacts of system anomalies
