At Duke Health, the Nursing Assistant (NA) is a patient care support partner collaborating with the Registered Nurse (RN) and/or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). This role involves performing direct patient care, assisting with non-direct patient care unit coordination, and executing tasks as delegated by the RN or LPN. The individual is expected to provide basic care and comfort, understand the needs of the patient population in the assigned area, and assist acutely ill patients. Key aspects include practicing medical asepsis, respecting patient dignity and privacy, adhering to policies, responding to emergencies, maintaining the patient/family environment, managing unit equipment and supplies, and accurately documenting patient care in the electronic health record. Additionally, the NA performs various clerical duties related to patient, unit, and hospital data and records, including operating patient care information systems.
