Naval Architect - Marine Engineer

FleetzeroHouston, TX
4d$120,000 - $157,000

About The Position

You will develop autonomous, electric, and hybrid vessels in this role. You will integrate with propulsion and autonomy teams to retrofit existing vessels with Fleetzero's propulsion systems and work as part of a larger team to develop new built electric autonomous vessels. This is a hands-on role, and you will be expected to own naval architecture and marine engineering projects across the life cycle from initial project scoping through design spirals, regulatory engagement, detailed design, shipyard, and commissioning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, or a related field
  • At least 3 years in naval architecture, with hands-on experience producing ship design drawings.
  • Expert in hull design, hydrodynamics, stability, and propulsion systems, with a focus on optimizing efficiency and performance.
  • Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD, Rhino3D, or equivalent CAD tools
  • Strong understanding of maritime regulations and submittal processes, with the ability to ensure designs meet certification standards.
  • Ability to travel and visit customer and vendor sites, including shipyards and vessels

Nice To Haves

  • Shipyard or construction experience is a plus.
  • P.E. in naval architecture, mechanical engineering, or electrical engineering
  • Tow tank experience
  • Theoretical knowledge of vessel powering requirements
  • Knowledge of published literature on hull resistance
  • FEA experience
  • Hands-on fabrication experience (preferably directly related to model testing, but any hands on experience that would develop shop floor fluency)

Responsibilities

  • Design vessel systems, including auxiliary, propulsion, structures, and layouts to maximize energy efficiency and performance.
  • Perform stability, mechanical, and structural analyses to ensure seaworthiness and compliance with class and port state rules.
  • Work closely with other engineers, naval architecture firms, detailed design shops, and shipyard teams to translate designs into reality, iterating based on real-world feedback.
  • Push the boundaries of vessel design by integrating advanced technologies such as air lubrication, advanced hull coatings, hull appendage modification, novel structures, heel compensation devices, and novel shafting and propeller arrangements.
  • Contribute to advanced hull designs focusing on hull efficiency and advanced technologies to reduce viscous and wave-making resistance.
  • Contribute to novel vessel structure and construction techniques.
