About The Position

The Nature Programmer develops and delivers engaging environmental education programs for diverse audiences, including adults, school groups, youth camps, and community organizations. Key duties include designing, leading, and evaluating both indoor and outdoor nature-based activities to ensure programs are dynamic and impactful, often with ambassador animals, as well as overseeing seasonal youth camp programs at the Nature Center. Additional responsibilities include providing animal care, assisting with staff and volunteer supervision, and supporting the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of educational displays, signage, and animal exhibits. The Nature Programmer is also responsible for welcoming visitors, delivering excellent customer service, and collaborating with media outlets on public relations and promotional materials. Other tasks involve assisting with special events, managing facility reservations and activity registrations, and performing additional assigned duties. The position requires performing light maintenance tasks, such as cleaning animal exhibits and programming spaces, making basic equipment repairs, and supporting grounds upkeep to maintain a safe and inviting environment. The incumbent reports to the Nature Center Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Experience teaching in nature centers, schools, scouts, camps, or similar environments
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • Possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Kansas driver’s license
  • Possess, or have the ability to obtain, CPR and/or First Aid Certification
  • Pass a background check, post-offer physical, and drug screening

Nice To Haves

  • Basic maintenance skills
  • A bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Natural Resources Management, or a closely related field
