About The Position

These positions will have fun this summer learning and working in Metro Parks’ Nature Centers, Fort Negley Visitor Center, or with the Outdoor Recreation or Community Engagement programs of the Metro Parks Natural Resources Division. Serve the public and connect people to nature, the outdoors and our cultural history! The POWER Youth program, previously known as Opportunity NOW, provides career exploration and work experience activities for youth 14 to 24 years old. The name POWER Youth was selected by the peer youth leadership team based on how they view themselves and their future.

Responsibilities

Develop and assist with educational exhibits, signage, literature, activities, and programming for families, day camps, summer program field trips, and more
Provide visitor services experiences in the centers and out in the parks by answering questions, providing trail maps and info, maintaining grounds, gardens and bird feeding stations, etc
Trail maintenance - trim vegetation, mulch, rake trails, cut new trails, collect litter, remove invasive plants
Develop, plan, lead, and assist with outdoor recreational programming for the public via hiking, canoeing, kayaking, mountain biking with Outdoor Recreation program
Assist with volunteer group projects like planting trees, or staff an educational booth with the Community Engagement program
Survey plant or wildlife species, or collect water or soil samples
Perform routine maintenance and small construction projects - installing bird nest boxes or bat boxes, painting picnic tables, repairing fences, etc
Assist with accession of artifacts and conducting associated research at Fort Negley
Perform routine cleaning and/or maintenance of recreational equipment and perform trail maintenance
