About The Position

This position is with the Chief Joseph Hatchery Monitoring and Evaluation and Harvest Programs. The incumbent will collect biological information using established procedures and protocols for total catch, harvest effort, mortality, species composition, origin, life history, mark type, tag detection and type, distribution, age, growth, sex and other basic biological data for fishery management purposes and participate in the collection and analysis of anadromous fisheries harvest data associated with upper Columbia River anadromous fish stocks and populations.

Requirements

  • Technician I: Requiring a High School Diploma or General Educational Diploma (GED) and a satisfactory work history.
  • Technician II: Requiring a High School Diploma or GED and 36 months progressively responsible experience at the Technician I level or equivalent in Fisheries Management, Natural Resources, OR other closely related field or an Associate’s Degree in Fisheries Management, Natural Resources, or other closely related field and 6 months of related experience at the Technician I level or equivalent.   • Requires knowledge of principles and procedures of biological data collection, fish culture, fish management and habits of fish species; fish, wildlife, and population ecology; trapping and or sampling gear construction, data collection hardware/software, GPS applications, Tribal fish and wildlife codes, laws, regulations and procedures.
  • Requires knowledge of standard fishery techniques.
  • Requires basic knowledge of biological data collection.
  • Requires accurate identification of freshwater fish species of the Columbia River basin.
  • Requires basic sampling gear and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Requires working knowledge of computers for word-processing, spreadsheet, and database software for data entry and web browser for researching sampling equipment.
  • Requires the skill of attention to detail.
  • Requires experience using hand and power tools, and proper care and maintenance of tools.
  • Requires sufficient knowledge of proper English usage, grammar, spelling, and punctuation to prepare professional correspondence.
  • Requires sufficient human relations skill to work productively and cooperatively with diverse teams, exercise patience when dealing with internal and external customers, and convey technical concepts.
  • Requires the ability to identify fish species found in the Upper Columbia.
  • Requires the ability to plan daily, monthly and yearly and assist with equipment operation.
  • Requires the ability to communicate with the public, tribal members, and other employees.
  • Requires the ability to follow directions and write clearly.
  • Requires the ability to operate electronic laboratory and field equipment, including tablets and computers and familiarity with databases, including data upload, queries and reports.

  • Requires the ability to efficiently fulfill the responsibilities of this position and ensure the success of the Colville Tribes’ Chief Joseph Hatchery Monitoring and Evaluation Program.

  • Requires the ability to enter data into spreadsheets and databases, quality control of finalized data sets.
  • Requires the ability to perform duties in both an office environment and at field sites where work is performed.

  • Requires the ability to travel distances on rough terrain while packing 50 lbs. and repetitively lift up to 50 lbs. and carry up to 45 lbs. while hiking in steep terrain or in fast flowing water.
  • Requires the ability to work a variable schedule, including: evenings, early mornings, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates.
  • Requires overnight travel at times.
  • Requires the ability to travel for meetings, training and conference participation as necessary.
  • Requires the ability and willingness to accommodate a flexible schedule with changes on short-notice.
  • Requires travel away from duty station to conduct field work for periods up to 10 consecutive days at a time.
  • Requires the ability and willingness to work indoors in an office or laboratory setting.
  • Requires ability to work and drive in adverse weather conditions and work in rough terrain.
  • Requires excellent physical condition and will be expected to pull, push, or lift heavy objects performing tasks on variable, slippery terrain in all weather conditions, including in and around swift moving rivers.
  • Requires the ability to work in inclement weather conditions on a boat at night and during the day.
  • Requires the ability swim and work comfortably on boats, docks, and catwalks around swift moving cold water.
  • Requires the ability to operate a 4-wheel drive vehicle and pull trailers.
  • Requires the ability to operate heavy equipment, traps, boats, powered and drift, chainsaws and power tools.
  • Requires background clearance (tribal, state, federal) and must maintain clearance throughout employment.
  • Requires an excellent record of attendance and must maintain throughout employment.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ vehicle insurance and maintain throughout employment.
  • Driving record must qualify for a U.S. Government Motor Vehicle Operators Identification card.
  • Must have or acquire First Aid/CPR certification within 90 days of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Requires knowledge and skill in identifying fish in the Upper Columbia Basin is highly valued (preferred.)
  • Towing and backing boat experience, preferred.
