About The Position

The Natural Resources Specialist 3 is a high-level, lead worker seasonal or variable position which provides project leadership in day-to-day and project related natural resource management, i.e., maintenance and restoration, and/or research and monitoring in Cleveland Metroparks and northeastern Ohio. The Natural Resource Specialist 3 provides project leadership, and quality assurance for assigned technical projects. This position performs as crew leaders, project coordinators, and manages projects with supervisor oversight.

Requirements

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license under the laws of the State of Ohio.
  • Knowledge and practical outdoor work experience including plant, insect, mammal, or bird identification skills, farming, forestry, hydrology, aquatic ecology or a strong desire and aptitude to develop these skills. For research related positions, knowledge and experience in research methods is desirable.
  • Ability to read maps, follow written directions, and navigate through forest or wetland areas.
  • Experience in computer applications including word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, database, and/or GIS and GPS and associated hardware is desirable
  • Ability to walk up to 5 miles daily through challenging terrain including heavy vegetation, wetlands, and steep slopes.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40 pounds up to 8 hours per day.
  • Ability to work outdoors and tolerate the climate and conditions of natural areas typical of northeast Ohio (including heat, humidity, poison ivy, and biting/stinging insects)
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions including rain, high or low temperatures, high humidity, insects, and difficult terrain.

Responsibilities

  • Develops or assists in the development of reports and maps, performs data entry, verification and analysis and makes presentation related to assigned projects when directed.
  • Safely operates and maintains equipment including but not limited to forestry measurement tools, portable data collectors, prescribed fire tools, chain saws, tractors, boats, and related equipment.
  • Provides leadership as a crew leader and/or project coordinator to Natural Resources Division and other staff with: Projects related to the maintenance and restoration of natural resources, including but not limited to tree planting, deer management, small mammal trapping, prescribed fire, invasive species management, and the construction, placement, and maintenance of breeding bird nest boxes, and/or Projects related to research and monitoring including data collection and the recording and maintenance of accurate and well-organized data files in written and electronic format for vegetation, aquatic resource, wetland or wildlife monitoring.
  • Keeps direct supervisor promptly informed of key/significant issues or concerns.
  • Carries out duties and responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner to maintain a safe work environment and surrounding area for oneself, co-workers and public. Responds to hazardous situations and/or potentially unsafe conditions by taking corrective action as capable and promptly notifying supervisory personnel.
  • Assists Natural Resources and other cooperating agency staff in other duties as apparent or assigned.
  • Oversees activities of volunteers and other seasonal employees participating in management and research and monitoring projects and tracks their hours.
