The Natural Resources Scientist Associate performs a variety of technical tasks to support departmental programs and initiatives. This role includes reviewing basic permit applications for compliance, conducting field inspections and environmental sampling, assisting with data maintenance and documentation, and supporting outreach events.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Water Resources, Environmental Studies, Earth or Agricultural Sciences, Engineering, Archeology, Construction Management, Health & Safety Management, Forestry, Biology, Wildlife Management, or a related field.
  • One (1) year of work experience involving any of the areas listed.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience may be considered for the above requirements.
  • Successful completion of a post-offer medical examination and background investigation.
  • Compliance with all County safety guidelines.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Possession of a valid New Mexico driver’s license by the date of employment and maintenance of the license while employed in this position.
  • Completion of FEMA training(s) as required for the position.
  • Submission of official transcripts verifying relevant coursework with the application.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct basic field inspections and collect, submit, and track environmental samples under the direction of Natural Resource Scientist II, III, or Program Managers.
  • Perform sanitary surveys, water use audits, illicit discharge inspections, stormwater inspections, water conservation checks, and well and septic system inspections.
  • Receive and respond to environmental, discharge, and waste complaints related to assigned areas; assist senior staff in developing recommendations and corrective actions.
  • Collect, process, store, retrieve, and assist with the analysis of Natural Resource Services data and spatial information in electronic and paper formats; maintain accurate records of inspections and investigations.
  • Verify compliance with relevant county ordinances; respond to inquiries from the public and regulated entities.
  • Support senior staff with application and plan reviews, environmental and technical report writing, research, and correspondence as assigned.
  • Provide telephone support, customer service, fee collection, basic permit issuance, and general assistance during departmental events and programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned, including participation in cross-departmental initiatives.
