About The Position

The Natural Resource Specialist position at the Department of Agriculture is located in the Tongass National Forest. The incumbent will serve as the Integrated Resources staff assistant to the District Ranger, responsible for planning, development, programming, implementation, and administration of various resource programs including fisheries, wildlife, subsistence, hydrology, soils, timber, silviculture, and botany/invasive programs.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be Selective Service registered or exempt.
  • Subject to satisfactory adjudication of background investigation and/or fingerprint check.
  • Successful completion of one year probationary period, unless previously served.
  • Must pass the E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968.
  • Degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position, or a combination of education and experience.
  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in developing and executing annual work plans for natural resources.
  • Ability to perform standard analyses of resource or environmental data.
  • Experience providing advice on natural resource management issues and projects.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate multiple resource uses, activities, and requirements with other resource management activities.
  • Develop, implement, and administer the fisheries, wildlife, and subsistence program and plans.
  • Administer the soils and water resource management program.
  • Direct the implementation of watershed restoration plans.
  • Assist in the development and integration of the botany/invasive program.
  • Develop the annual program of work determining budgeting, administrative, and staffing needs.
  • Review environmental documents for each program where applicable.
  • Plan the work to be accomplished by the unit, assign work to employees, and establish production or quality standards for the unit's work.
