About The Position

The Nural Resource Specialist position at the Department of Agriculture is located in the Malheur National Forest, John Day, Oregon. The incumbent will serve as the Range Monitoring Coordinator, primarily responsible for developing, planning, and executing riparian area surveys in critical fish habitats. This role involves consulting with Fish and Wildlife and National Marine Fisheries Services to ensure effective monitoring and management of natural resources.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship or National status.
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines.
  • Specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service, including participation in developing plans for resource management and environmental protection programs.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in developing plans to overcome significant resource problems related to forest management and fisheries.
  • Experience in reviewing or developing standard plans for forestry resource management programs.

Responsibilities

  • Compile data and prepare end-of-year reports required by the Services.
  • Serve as the rangeland monitoring lead and principal contact to coordinate an interdisciplinary team.
  • Plan timing of monitoring field work and communicate with range consultants and permittees to schedule appropriate timing of surveys.
  • Maintain a shared calendar with proposed dates of site surveys throughout the season.
  • Apply mastery of multiple indicator monitoring methodology and other range monitoring methods to evaluate grazing impacts across sensitive areas of the forest.
  • Inspect grazing allotments for compliance with livestock grazing strategies and management practices that are part of the grazing permit.
  • Ensure quality control of collected data.
  • Understand requirements set by the FWS and NOAA Fisheries for riparian monitoring on the forest.
  • Manage agreements with partners to execute site evaluations.
  • Supervise 1-2 PSE technicians.
