About The Position

The Natural Resource Specialist III - Water Quality Management position serves as a senior technical lead specialist within the Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability. This role involves managing watershed monitoring programs, conducting complex environmental research, and ensuring compliance with water quality regulations. The specialist will supervise fieldwork, investigations, data analysis, and report preparation, while also representing the department in community engagements and committees.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in environmental, regional, urban or city planning, or in a natural resource, environmental or biological science.
• Two years of professional experience in a planning, science or related field.
• Possession of a valid non-commercial class C Maryland Driver's license.

Nice To Haves

• Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) certifications in benthic macroinvertebrate sampling and fish taxonomy.
• Accredited certification in macroinvertebrate identification.
• Experience in ecological sampling of aquatic ecosystems and using electrofishing techniques.
• Experience with R programming language related to environmental and biological fields.

Responsibilities

• Supervise or serve as a senior technical lead specialist in watershed monitoring programs.
• Conduct field investigations and surveys of watercourses, wetlands, and wildlife habitats.
• Perform complex environmental and natural resources research related to water quality.
• Compile detailed information, analyze data, and prepare reports on environmental issues.
• Monitor and report on water quality compliance with County and State laws.
• Investigate and recommend corrective actions for degraded streams and wetlands.
• Represent the department before community groups and on various committees.
