About The Position

This seasonal position has the anticipated duration of June 15, 2025 - December 15, 2025. Note: These are estimated dates. Length of season may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project's control. As a Natural Resource Specialist 1 (Project Biologist) in Springfield, Oregon, you will act as a project assistant within the Native Fish Investigations Program by providing technical support for research and monitoring activities for Bull Trout in the Willamette Basin. These research activities provide valuable data that inform the decisions of managers of Fish Division programs, regional supervisors, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the U.S. Forest Service.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor's degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework
  • Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with fish sampling techniques, including snorkeling, electrofishing, and operation of weirs and screw traps
  • Experience with the operation of PIT tag detection systems
  • Experience safely handling federally or state-listed fish species
  • Experience with Bull Trout life history and identification of fishes of Cascade Mountains drainages in the upper Willamette Basin
  • Experience operating non-motorized boats in rivers
  • Experience traversing challenging terrain to conduct walking and wading surveys
  • Supervising experience

Responsibilities

  • Independent collection of data

  • Supervise the work of 1-3 Biological Science Assistants
  • Assist in crew training and the development of work schedules
  • Contribute to quality control of collected data, data entry, and summary analysis
  • Assist in the preparation of annual reports
