About The Position

The Natural Resource Member position at American Conservation Experience involves assisting National Park Service staff with biological monitoring projects at the John Muir National Historic Site. This paid internship focuses on managing non-native invasive plants and conducting biological monitoring, providing valuable experience in natural resource management and ecological restoration.

Requirements

  • Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional manner.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Willing to undergo and pass required criminal history checks.
  • Ability to perform essential duties with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • A love of nature and physical outdoor work, with an interest in resource management.
  • Aptitude for working outdoors in varying climates and on steep slopes, with the ability to carry up to 30 pounds.
  • Willing to work in areas with environmental hazards such as ticks and rattlesnakes.
  • Ability to work well in a team while balancing individual responsibilities.
  • Ability to use basic computer programs (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Education and/or experience in environmental sciences such as biology, ecology, or natural resources management.
  • CPR/First Aid, Wilderness First Aid training or willingness to be trained.
  • Experience using ArcGIS software platforms.
  • Bilingual applicants are encouraged, especially in Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese.
  • Deep interest in entering the public service field as a natural resource professional.

Responsibilities

  • Manage non-native invasive plants using manual techniques and assist with herbicide application.
  • Identify, monitor, and map target species and populations of native and invasive plant species using GPS units.
  • Collect data from various plant species for the California Phenology Project.
  • Serve as a biological monitor during mowing operations.
  • Assist biologists with various biological monitoring projects including reptile, small mammal, bird, and pollinator surveys.
  • Assist with photo-point, wildlife camera, and water quality monitoring.
  • Provide NRM support through maintaining and cleaning equipment, assisting with outreach events, attending relevant meetings, and participating in training.

Benefits

  • Living allowance of $432/week to offset costs of housing, food, and incidental expenses.
