About The Position

The Natural Resource Management Individual Placement is an AmeriCorps position with Conservation Corps New Mexico, focused on invasive species management at Pecos National Historical Park. This role provides hands-on experience in natural resource management, working alongside park biologists and other professionals. Participants will engage in various conservation projects, contributing to the preservation of natural and cultural resources while gaining valuable skills and networking opportunities within the National Park Service.

Requirements

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check
  • Valid U.S Driver's License - Drivers must be over 21 or have had a license for at least 3 years
  • Personal vehicle for use during time off
  • Must be between the ages of 17-30 (35 for veterans) at the time the individual begins term of service

Responsibilities

  • Removal of invasive tree species from historical pastures using rechargeable reciprocating saws and pruners
  • Non-native plant management including removal of non-native plants with brush cutters and weed eaters
  • Pulling and/or digging up non-native plants
  • Assisting staff with spraying non-native plants using herbicide in a backpack sprayer
  • Mapping non-native plant treatments with GPS units
  • Removal and maintenance of fencing within the park
  • Native Plant Restoration project using native seed and hydro mulching/hydroseeding equipment
  • Collecting data and mapping work using GIS programs on tablets
  • Editing and storing field data using GIS programs
  • Monitoring work completed by taking photos and establishing photo points
  • Writing daily logs and reports of work completed
  • Supporting youth conservation crews with removing invasive trees from pastures and maintaining beaver exclosures
  • Learning plant identification skills
  • Monitoring vegetation plots and transects
  • Placing game cameras throughout the park to document wildlife
  • Conducting bird surveys
  • Thinning trees in archaeological sites and photo monitoring work within sites
