MITRE’s Human Language Technology (HLT) Department works across the full range of US Government agencies to provide language processing solutions to address complex mission needs for our sponsors. Our department’s work provides opportunities to apply natural language processing solutions to real-world challenges and to research and prototype new methods to address critical sponsor mission needs. Our department has deep expertise in a wide range of technology areas, including large language models, computational linguistics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, speech processing, information extraction, automatic knowledge base population, cross-language information retrieval, identity matching/resolution. We are looking for highly-motivated, adaptive, and self-directed candidates to perform research, development, engineering, evaluation and integration in the field of natural language processing, to include computational linguistics, artificial intelligence/machine learning and large language models (LLMs) as applied to machine and computer-assisted translation, speech processing, information extraction, information retrieval, identity matching and associated areas of human language technology.

Requirements

  • Sustained excellence in academic performance
  • Must be a student enrolled full-time in an accredited degree-seeking program in Computer Science, Linguistics, Data Science, or a related degree and continue to be enrolled full-time the semester following the internship.
  • Experience with one or more general purpose programming languages including: C/C++, Java, MATLAB, Go, Python or similar.
  • Experience or coursework in Natural Language Processing and its applications

Nice To Haves

  • Demonstrated interest in serving the public
  • Completion of a significant project leveraging Natural Language Processing
  • Experience with one or more machine learning or NLP libraries such as Keras, TensorFlow, Pandas, Scikit-learn, Stanford CoreNLP, spaCy, NLTK, or similar.
  • Preference may be given to qualified candidates with active US government security clearance
