The National Safety Director is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing a comprehensive Environmental, Health and Safety program across all regions and operations. This leader ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local safety regulations (e.g., OSHA, DOT, FCC), industry standards, and company policies. The role involves strategic planning, hands-on field engagement, leadership development, and continuous improvement of safety practices, particularly in high-risk environments such as aerial construction, boring underground, tower climbing, and utility work and fosters a proactive safety culture.

  • Safety Leadership & Strategy Develop and implement a national Environmental, Health and Safety program aligned with company goals and industry best practices within the departmental financial budget.
  • Actively participate in staff meetings led by company executives for strategic planning and budgeting.
  • Facilitate and develop efficiencies within department.
  • Serve as the primary subject matter expert on health and safety compliance across all job sites.
  • Champion a culture of safety from the field to the executive level.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, FCC, DOT, DEP, and other applicable regulatory agencies.
  • Create, maintain, and enforce company-wide safety policies, procedures, and manuals.
  • Lead all incident investigations and root cause analysis; oversee corrective action implementation.
  • Acts as a spokesperson on Environmental, Health and Safety issues.
  • Oversee implementation of region-wide safety audit and inspection programs in collaboration with operations leaders to ensure regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and the reinforcement of a strong safety culture.
  • Implement certifications and competency programs (e.g., CPR/First Aid, tower rescue, RF awareness).
  • Coordinate with operations to ensure field crews are fully trained and prepared.
  • Ensure the safety and operations teams coordinate and conduct regular site visits, audits, and inspections across all operating regions to proactively identify risks, verify compliance with safety protocols, and drive continuous improvement in field safety performance.
  • Monitor and evaluate field safety practices and address non-compliance in real time.
  • Leverage data and analytics to identify trends and target improvements.
  • Lead and mentor a team of regional or area safety managers/coordinators.
  • Support hiring, training, and performance evaluations for safety personnel.
  • Drive accountability and professional development within the safety department.
  • Monitor and mitigate risks associated with telecom field operations, including aerial lifts, traffic control, fall protection, confined space entry, and electrical hazards.
  • Collaborate with insurance providers and legal counsel on claims and litigation support.
  • Prepare and present safety metrics, incident reports, and KPIs to executive leadership.
  • Maintain documentation for audits, inspections, and regulatory reporting.
  • Communicate effectively with internal teams, clients, and subcontractors.
  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety, Environmental Science, Construction Management, or a related field (or equivalent experience and certifications).
  • 10 years of progressive experience in construction or telecommunications safety management.
  • 3+ years in a national or multi-region leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA 1926/1910, DOT, RF safety, and ANSI standards.
  • Proven experience in aerial/underground telecom operations and tower safety protocols.
  • Ability to travel nationally up to 50–70% of the time.
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Able to stand and move for extended periods while conducting training.
  • Must be able to lift to 25 pounds at times.
  • Traveling required.
  • Certifications such as CHST, CSP, OSHA 500, or equivalent strongly preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Hands-on experience with safety management systems (SMS) and compliance platforms.
  • Ability to build trust with field teams and coach safety through influence.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software
