NAGPRA Specialist, Museum of Peoples & Cultures Join us at the BYU Museum of Peoples and Cultures, where we care for the anthropological, archaeological, and ethnographic collections in university custody. As our Specialist for the Native American Graves Protection & Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), you will provide administrative support, maintain records, and handle all general business processes related to compliance with NAGPRA. You will also serve as an intermediary between museum administration, on-campus departments, and Native American nations and peoples. Requirements

• A firm commitment to the mission of BYU
• Bachelor’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, museum studies, Native American studies, or other cognate field, and 2+ years of related museum collections work experience, or equivalent combination of education & experience
• Computer proficiency, familiarity with MS Office and Excel, and demonstrated ability to learn new systems quickly
• Strong communication skills
• Experience working independently and with a team
• Knowledge of archaeological methods and practices
• Knowledge of prehistory and history of western North America

Nice To Haves

• Master’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, museum studies, Native American Studies, or other cognate field
• Knowledge of or familiarity with NAGPRA regulations
• Experience working with Native American nations and communities

Responsibilities

• Provide administrative and organizational support to the Museum Director in relation to NAGPRA implementation.
• Design and develop short and long-term plans, programs, and events connected to repatriations and curation of NAGPRA items.
• Coordinate, arrange, and participate in NAGPRA consultation activities that engage Native American communities.
• Draft reports and correspondence, conduct inventories, and reconcile old documentation related to collections potentially impacted by NAGPRA regulations.
• Maintain records on all aspects of NAGPRA work, including digital and paper documents and databases.
• Assist the Museum Director in identifying and applying for grants and other funding to support NAGPRA and repatriation efforts.
• Handle and prepare ancestral remains and belongings for return as needed.
• Work with University departments and other units to inventory and create summaries of all human remains and associated/unassociated funerary objects on campus.
• Advise and train museum staff and other campus employees in regard to NAGPRA and repatriations.
