About The Position

The Music Therapist provides innovative and creative end-of-life music therapy care for patients in hospice care and their families or loved ones. This role includes non-pharmacological symptom management, emotional/spiritual care, and bereavement support. The Music Therapist participates as a core member of the interdisciplinary team, working closely with all team members to provide these services in both individual and group settings. The position requires engagement in continuing education, personal development, and building supportive relationships to support the health and growth of the music therapy program. The therapist utilizes advanced music therapy competencies, rooted in a thorough understanding of counseling theory and practice, to provide excellent person-centered care, integrating a holistic philosophical orientation and a deep respect for all personal belief systems to serve patients and loved ones of diverse cultural backgrounds. The Music Therapist independently structures daily, weekly, and monthly duties, managing competing priorities, meetings, projects, and patient care.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music Therapy or Music Therapy equivalency degree required.
  • One-year Music Therapy clinical experience.
  • Music Therapist-Board Certified (MT-BC) through the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
  • Valid driver’s license and automobile insurance.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Music Therapy, or pursuit of Masters in Music Therapy, per approval.
  • Hospice experience preferred.
  • Experience as an AMTA approved Music Therapy Intern Supervisor preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide initial and ongoing assessment, care planning, and interventions pertaining to bereavement support, spiritual care counseling, and symptom management needs for patients and family members in a hospice setting.
  • Provide grief support to individuals and groups, occasionally carrying a caseload of bereavement clients, or assisting with grief support groups as needed.
  • Document, in accordance with professional and hospice standards, music therapy services provided to hospice patients/caregivers from admission to hospice care and, for the caregivers, up to 12 months after the patient’s death.
  • Serve as an active core member of the Interdisciplinary Group (IDG).
  • Collaborate with all IDG members to provide excellent person-centered holistic care.
  • Engage in discharge planning in accordance with standards set by Medicare.
  • Attend team meetings, clinical group meetings, staff meetings and other meetings and outreach events pertinent to music therapy, grief support, or Four Seasons development/growth.
  • Train and supervise music therapy interns for patient/family care.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development in order to provide innovative and current music therapy techniques in both individual and group settings.
  • Participate in music therapy team-based projects including research, community outreach and staff education/support.
  • Facilitate groups that co-create the care experience of hospice, grief support, and other clients.
  • Provide music therapy within a current and intentional clinical philosophical orientation.
  • Collaborate in the process of developing Music Therapy and Grief Support Best Practices.
  • Use musical abilities to assist with Four Seasons outreach and development activities.
  • Assist with funerals and memorial services as requested and available.
  • Adhere to the practice of confidentiality regarding patient, client and family information.
  • Practice within the scope of license, certification or registration, where applicable, and as required by law and regulation.
  • Practice safety and infection control protocols.
  • Perform duties in compliance with Medicare Condition of Participation and North Carolina laws.
  • Music recording for legacy projects, heartbeat recordings, etc.
  • Perform other, yet similar, duties as assigned.
