About The Position

Provides music therapy directly to patients in coordination with the Plan of Care established by the interdisciplinary team. May provide individual and group music therapy to residents of ALF, SNF and/or other community organizations as a contract service. Provide music therapy to bereaved adults or through the Avow Kids Program.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in music therapy from a college/university program approved by the Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) and the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA).
  • Must have MT-BC credential.
  • Must maintain active MT-BC (Music Therapist – Board Certified, credential provided by the Certification Board for Music Therapists) and be in good standing.
  • Current Florida Driver’s License.
  • Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) upon hire and maintain without expiration during employment.
  • Become Crowd Control Certified within 90 days of hire. Must maintain and keep current.
  • Must have the ability to perform assessments and identify physical, psychological or medical limitations, as well as the client’s ability to participate in therapeutic session.
  • Therapist must demonstrate the ability to develop an initial and on-going treatment plan, in collaboration with patient, family and other members of the interdisciplinary team.
  • The professional is expected to document immediately following each visit and sync back for real-time charting.
  • Must be able to develop and present educational opportunities to staff, volunteers and the community.
  • Must be self-motivated and responsible in the performance of duties.
  • Must play at least one accompaniment instrument (i.e. piano, guitar) and have pleasant singing voice.
  • Must be comfortable facilitating multiple musical interventions (i.e. song lyric interpretation, songwriting, life review through music, relaxation/imagery with music, etc.)
  • Must be able to perform music from a variety of genres and time periods, and must be comfortable providing improvisational music.
  • Should be able to facilitate groups of non-hospice residents in an ALF, SNF and/or other community organization with and without dementia.
  • The professional must be comfortable working with children and adults across all settings.
  • Flexible schedule to adhere to the needs of populations served, including occasional nights and weekends.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to identify problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must able to endure exposure to common household allergens (i.e. pets, plants, dust, etc.).

Nice To Haves

  • Professional music therapy experience in a health related and/or hospice setting preferred.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Professional membership with American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) preferred.
  • If selected for community outreach or conference presentations, the professional must attend Toastmasters in preparation.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients for their response to musical interventions and creates goals/interventions within the plan of care established in collaboration with the interdisciplinary group.
  • Provides regular music therapy visits to patients in caseload, creating and implementing appropriate musical interventions for these visits;
  • Maintains productivity standards established by the organization.
  • By applying the techniques of music therapy, assists patients and families in coping with their illness alleviating signs and symptoms of the disease, provides education, and encourages expression of end of life issues through this modality.
  • Participates in Complementary Therapies Department meetings and Avow staff meetings, as well as those designated by contracting organization.
  • Functions as member of the Complementary Therapies Department and the interdisciplinary teams. Attends IDG as assigned.
  • Engages in new program development and implementation as needed.
  • Collaborates with Complementary Therapies Department staff as well as all other Avow departments on special projects and events.
  • Educates the staff and community to the benefits of music therapy.
  • Documents music therapy sessions electronically in designated software program. Utilizes handheld device provided by Avow with real-time documentation and syncing per Avow policy and procedures.
  • Collaborates with Avow Kids and adult bereavement departments to provide music therapy.
  • Maintains caseload with PIC patients.
  • Participates in camps and events on evenings and weekends as assigned, along with overnight camp.
  • Participates in QAPI, data based outcomes, grant writing opportunities as assigned.
  • Adheres to all Policies and Procedures of Avow with annual review of policy handbook.
  • Proactively provides handouts on educational materials to patients/families including directing to teaching videos.
  • Actively participates in customer engagement experience outcomes.
  • Completes and remains active as a crowd control manager.
  • Independently participates in the “A Vow to Volunteer” program.
  • Meets productivity expectations as assigned by the organization.
  • Other duties as assigned.
