About The Position

The Music Technology Manager will work under the CTSA Director of Technology Services and will work closely with the CTSA Production team. The Production team also includes an Assistant Production Manager for Music whose primary responsibility is supporting Music Department concerts. In the Music Department, the Gassmann Studios Director is a faculty member who oversees those specialized studios, and who typically supervises one or more Graduate Student Researchers or Teaching Assistants with advanced technology skills who also help support the studios. The Music Technology Manager will coordinate with faculty and graduate students in the Music Department's PhD program in Integrated Composition, Improvisation and Technology to support specialized research and creative activity in computer music. They will also provide more general music technology support for all faculty and students in the Music Department, and will maintain the Arts Media Center as a resource for students and faculty in all four CTSA departments (Music, Dance, Drama and Art).

Requirements

  • Mastery level knowledge in sound and digital audio and video technologies.
  • Experience purchasing, installing, and maintaining audio and computer music equipment and software.
  • Broad knowledge of music software including but not limited to, Max, Pro Tools, Live, Reason, Logic, Sibelius, Audacity, Jack, QLab, Pd, SuperCollider, ChucK, etc.
  • Thorough verbal and interpersonal communication skills to communicate complex instructions and information to disparate constituencies.
  • Thorough problem recognition, avoidance and resolution skills.
  • Thorough organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated skill in planning, setting priorities, and developing policies and procedures.
  • Bachelor of Music or Music Technology, or equivalent experience.
  • 3-5 years Sound equipment or music technology experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with programming languages such as Java and Objective C.

Responsibilities

  • Provide music technology support to Music Department faculty and students.
  • Coordinate with the Gassmann Studios Director to help maintain specialized audio technology labs and equipment inventory.
  • Manage the Arts Media Center (AMC), providing equipment checkout, a small music-focused computer lab, and course reserve materials.
  • Maintain and improve existing music technology labs and equipment, including overseeing software and hardware upgrades.
  • Advise on purchases for the Gassmann Studios and the AMC computer lab.
  • Maintain the Gassmann and AMC checkout equipment inventories, overseeing checkouts to faculty and students.
  • Manage the budget, student worker staffing, security and operating procedures for the AMC.
  • Coordinate AMC course reserves and acquisitions with UCI Libraries.
  • Provide general technological support for Music Department faculty and graduate student research and creative activity.
  • Provide technical direction for Music Department lectures and concerts that require specialized music technology applications.
  • Facilitate the purchasing of music technology hardware, software and supplies.
  • Design and install new music technology facilities and resources when needed.
  • Provide grant-writing and administration support for computer music research and creative activity.
