About The Position

The Museum Specialist (Sr. Art Handler) position at the National Gallery of Art is responsible for the coordination and execution of art movement, packing, and handling of artworks. This role involves maintaining records of all works of art, ensuring their safety and condition, and leading special art movement projects. The incumbent will collaborate with various stakeholders to meet deadlines for exhibition installations and will uphold the highest standards of art handling excellence.

Requirements

• At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level in the Federal service or private sector, executing aspects of art movement projects for a museum or similar cultural institution.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds and ride for long periods in vehicles.
• Ability to work extended shifts, weekends, and evenings.
• Passing of a TSA Security Threat Assessment.

Nice To Haves

• Experience in collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of museum materials.
• Knowledge of proper artwork handling, packing, and storage techniques.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with exhibition curators, registrars, coordinators, design and installation staff, conservators, and outside contractors to coordinate schedules for exhibition installations.
• Properly install works of art in all media utilizing appropriate installation techniques and aesthetic considerations.
• Work closely with registrars and conservators to determine the best method for packing artworks.
• Make packing and storage recommendations for new acquisitions and develop customized packing systems for unique objects.
• Devise new packing techniques based on scientific data and materials in consultation with conservation.
• Prepare works of art for shipment and coordinate condition report examinations with conservators.
• Direct and oversee crating and packing needs for artworks, ensuring proper handling during transit and installation.
