About The Position

The Museum Specialist (History) at the Naval History and Heritage Command is responsible for managing and preserving the small arms and ordnance collection. This role involves researching historical materials, overseeing acquisitions and displays, and ensuring the security and accountability of valuable artifacts. The specialist serves as a technical point of contact for the collection and must adhere to Department of the Navy regulations.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09 or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
  • Knowledge of museum collections management practices, including acquisition, evaluation, registration, cataloging, preserving, storage, and retrieval of artifacts.
  • Experience serving as a technical point of contact regarding small arms and ordnance collections.
  • Research conservation methods and techniques for managing specialized small arms, ordnance, and edged weapons.
  • Ability to answer technical and general inquiries on historic museum collections.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a related field such as art, history, or museum studies.
  • Two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree in a related field.

Responsibilities

  • Research a variety of materials to identify and document historic collections.
  • Oversee and provide guidance on the acquisition, loan, and display of the small arms and ordnance collection.
  • Serve as a technical point of contact regarding the small arms and ordnance collection.
  • Manage the preservation, accountability, and security of the small arms and ordnance collection.
  • Enter collection data into the Naval History and Heritage Command collection management database.
  • Familiarize and manage the small arms and ordnance collection in accordance with Department of the Navy regulations.
