About The Position

The Museum Specialist (Art) at the Smithsonian Institution is responsible for managing and maintaining art collections, ensuring adherence to institutional policies and procedures. This role involves coordinating the transportation of objects, monitoring environmental conditions for display and storage, and serving as a liaison with various programs within the institution. The specialist will also guide team members in their tasks and support digitization efforts for the collections.

Requirements

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 in the Federal Service, including maintaining museum collections using collections information systems and databases.
• Experience leading a team in the safe movement of a museum collection.
• Conducting regular inventories, completing conditions assessments, and object cleaning.
• Digitalizing a museum collection and working with a collection of antique furniture, lighting, decorative, and fine arts.
• A CDL Class A or B commercial driver license (CDL) is required.

Nice To Haves

• Experience with collections management planning and inventory plans for specialized collections and art pieces.
• Ability to use computer software to inventory and record changes in the physical elements of the collection.
• Knowledge in managing and mitigating risks to collections regarding emergencies, safety, and security.

Responsibilities

• Maintain collections and object information within collection inventory systems or software.
• Coordinate transportation and shipment of objects between facilities.
• Ensure that museum display and storage environments are regularly monitored and meet established environmental controls.
• Serve as point of contact with the SI's Digitization Program Office.
• Guide others in completions of tasks to support their assigned projects.
• Serve as the point of contact with the National Collections Programs.
