About The Position

The University of Missouri's Museum of Anthropology is seeking a dedicated NAGPRA Coordinator to facilitate the respectful care and repatriation of Native American ancestors and cultural items. This full-time position involves close collaboration with Native American Tribes and requires a strong understanding of cultural sensitivity and organizational skills to manage NAGPRA compliance effectively.

Requirements

• A Bachelor's degree in a related area or equivalent combination of education and experience
• At least 2 years of experience in a relevant field
• Proven understanding of the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) and its regulations
• One year of direct experience working on NAGPRA compliance
• Effective communication and organizational skills
• Attention to detail and ability to work independently

Nice To Haves

• A bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Museum Studies, Native American Studies, Historic Preservation, or other related field
• Willingness to function as part of a team
• Tact and discretion with sensitive matters

Responsibilities

• Communicate with tribes for consultations and repatriations
• Conduct in-depth cultural affiliation research
• Aid the Director in developing Notices for submission to the Federal Register
• Digitize documents to be shared with tribes
• Write reports for grant work
• Prepare summary reports and work with biological anthropologists
• Organize logistics for meetings with tribes and team members
• Evaluate information on archaeological collections and applicability to NAGPRA
• Rehouse and photograph artifacts with cultural sensitivity in mind
• Develop, prepare, and coordinate grant applications and grant-related activities to obtain funding for NAGPRA projects and related work
