About The Position

The Curator of Education is responsible for creation and execution of all educational activities, programs, and special events for the Museum of the Cape Fear main building, the historic 1897 Poe House, and other areas of the complex. This position recruits and oversees the museum’s volunteer program and may supervise temporary employees. This position reports to the Business Officer. This position is responsible for overseeing the interpretive goals for daily programming and special events; creating yearly calendar of events; developing, implementing and evaluating in-house and outreach programs. This includes submitting yearly budgets for programs. This position is knowledgeable of museum standards and practices in the areas of interpretation, visitor services, program development, and volunteer management. Other functions of this position include grant writing and seeking creative collaborative partnerships.

Requirements

  • Must be able to work Tuesday - Saturday 8:00am-5:00pm.
  • Must have the ability to lift, push, pull, crouch, bend, and other forms of movement for the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Biology, Botany, Conservation, Education, History or Zoology from an appropriately accredited institution AND four years of museum or related work, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in museum education program development, execution and evaluation.
  • Experience in management of staff/volunteers and schedules.
  • Experience researching historical content for programs and social media.

Responsibilities

  • Manage all educational activities at the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex
  • Recruitment, training and oversight of the museum’s volunteer program.
  • Development of educational opportunities for educators and K-12 students.
  • Provides educational content for website and social media accounts.
  • Develops and conducts the museum’s Summer Camp.
