About The Position

The Museum Educator, Academic Initiatives at the Smart Museum of Art is responsible for enhancing the museum's commitment to research, teaching, and learning within the University of Chicago and the broader academic community. This role involves administering academic initiatives, collaborating with students and educators, and integrating arts education across various disciplines. The position aims to create meaningful experiences and support sustainable departmental operations while fostering a vibrant workplace culture.

Requirements

  • Experience in museum education, academic programming, or a related field.
  • Strong research skills, particularly in art history or related disciplines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for collaboration with diverse groups.
  • Ability to develop and implement educational programs and initiatives.
  • Knowledge of best practices in museum education and higher education.

  • Familiarity with digital tools and methodologies in education and museum contexts.
  • Experience in supervising students or interns in an educational setting.
  • Understanding of inclusive practices in education and museum work.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborates in the development, coordination, and implementation of innovative, inclusive, meaningful, and sustainable academic research, teaching, and learning initiatives.
  • Schedules and facilitates College and University class visits from across disciplines to the Smart Museum's study room(s) and galleries.
  • Researches artwork in the Smart Museum's collection and exhibitions to support teaching and learning, creating reparative and inclusive collections research materials.
  • Proactively seeks new and creative ways to increase curricular engagement with the Smart Museum's collections and exhibitions.
  • Supervises limited-term and grant-funded positions, with dotted reporting lines to the Director of the Feitler Center and Head of Education.
  • Assists in equitable practices of hiring, training, supervising, and mentoring students and professionals at the Smart.
  • Convenes and coordinates with the Feitler Center Faculty Advisory Committee to improve academic initiatives.
  • Maintains knowledge of best practices and standards in museum education and integrating arts into research and teaching.
  • Participates in the movement of collection materials and digitization projects as needed.
  • Creates exhibition and collections guides, curriculum, and pedagogical workshops in collaboration with other educators and curators.
  • Identifies and facilitates curricular and co-curricular academic programs in collaboration with the Manager of Campus and Community Engagement.
  • Builds and sustains academic partnerships through the support of pedagogical exhibitions.
