About The Position

The Museum Attendant II position at the Texas Science & Natural History Museum involves providing a positive visitor experience while ensuring security and safety within the museum. The attendant will interact with visitors of all ages, oversee building facilities during operating hours and special events, and serve as the lead attendant in the absence of the Facilities Supervisor. The role is crucial for protecting the University’s collections and property while ensuring a pleasant experience for all staff and visitors.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED and at least one year experience in a museum or other cultural organization.
  • Must enjoy working with the public and have the ability to deal with a wide variety of people in varying circumstances.
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Promotes a collaborative climate that welcomes all individuals to the museum.
  • Ability to calmly organize and effectively direct in emergency situations.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team and individually.
  • Demonstrated professional demeanor and personal initiative.
  • Availability to work weekends and evenings.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s Degree and educational background or interest in science and natural history.
  • Familiarity with Texas Science & Natural History Museum.
  • One to three years security experience in an art museum, general museum/gallery, or other cultural organization.
  • Current certification in AED, CPR, and First Aid.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the safety and security of the museum by monitoring and protecting visitors, exhibitions, building, and grounds.
  • Provide clear guidance, direction, and information to ensure that all visitors have a positive and welcoming experience.
  • Provide knowledge of museum amenities, exhibitions, and events to visitors.
  • Serve as lead Museum Attendant in the absence of Facilities Supervisor, including during weekend and evening event shifts.
  • Document and report observed physical interactions with exhibits and collections by visitors, and address any inappropriate behavior.
  • Report any missing, damaged objects, or unusual conditions to supervisors.
  • Report any irregularities pertaining to building operations, safety, or fire hazards.
  • Follow museum policies and security procedures to assist in the opening and closing of the museum, daily operations, and during special events.
  • Actively participate in training programs to improve knowledge of the museum, security best practices, and customer service skills.
  • Operate freight elevator and manual warehouse equipment and work as a team member to set up furniture and equipment for events.
  • Serve as initial responder in the event of an emergency, know evacuation procedures and routes.
  • Act in a calm and decisive manner in assisting in the evacuation of the public and staff during emergencies.
