About The Position

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) at MUSC Health North Charleston is responsible for quality patient care under the direction of a physician or licensed healthcare provider in a clinical practice. Duties include rooming patients, taking vitals and health history, documenting in an electronic medical record, giving injections, and assisting with minor procedures. The position ensures accurate calibrations, cleaning, and scheduled maintenance of clinical/lab equipment as required by OSHA, DHEC, and UMA. The CMA maintains and reviews patient records, communicates plans of care, and educates patients as necessary. The role also involves maintaining exam room supplies, assisting with scheduling appointments, triaging patients, and preparing for physician exams and procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited medical assisting program.
  • One year of patient care experience preferred.
  • Must be certified through AMT, AAMA, NHA, NAHP, MedCA, NCCT, or NAHP.
  • Current AHA BLS certification or American Red Cross BLS for Healthcare Providers certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients and take vitals and health history.
  • Document in an electronic medical record.
  • Give injections and assist with minor procedures.
  • Ensure accurate calibrations, cleaning, and maintenance of clinical/lab equipment.
  • Maintain and review patient records and communicate as appropriate.
  • Document test and exam results.
  • Communicate plan of care to the patient and develop patient education materials.
  • Maintain exam room supplies and cleanliness of the patient care environment.
  • Assist with scheduling of appointments and referrals based on urgency.
  • Screen patients for appropriate information and provide patient education.
  • Observe, record, and report patient's physical and psychosocial condition.
  • Respond to and triage phone calls.
  • Call in orders as ordered by physician.
  • Instruct patients regarding treatment and/or medication.
  • Monitor and distribute medication including samples and controlled substances.
  • Triages patients and prepares for physician exams and procedures.
  • Administer prescribed treatments and tests as ordered by the physician.
