JOB PURPOSE The Multimedia Communications Specialist supports the creation of high-quality video and multimedia content that aids with fundraising, donor engagement, and strategic communications initiatives. Working in close partnership with Development & Alumni Affairs (DAA) and University Communications and Marketing (UCAM), this role produces compelling, informative, and inspirational content that advances Wayne State University’s mission, priorities, and values. The position reports to the Associate Director of Multimedia within UCAM.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in video production, communications, or a related field.
  • Specialist (minimum 5 years of job-related experience)
  • Experience in higher education or nonprofit fundraising environments is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrates expertise using professional Sony video cameras.
  • Strong editing experience using Final Cut Pro X and/or DaVinci Resolve.
  • Proven research, interviewing, and storytelling skills.
  • Solid understanding of fundraising, stewardship processes, and donor communications.
  • Experience with complementary communication disciplines such as graphic design, web content, and social media is highly desirable.
  • Planning and Organization: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrate maturity, sound judgment, and strong time-management skills.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in recording high-quality audio and video for interviews and presentations. Skilled in lighting techniques and the effective use of B-roll to enhance storytelling. Advanced knowledge of Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve; familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and After Effects is a plus. Proficient with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and Teams. Ability to translate complex concepts into clear, accessible messages.

Responsibilities

  • Develop compelling video and multimedia content through interviews with faculty, students, donors, and staff. Capture and curate high-quality B-roll footage to support storytelling and fundraising initiatives for individuals, corporations, and foundations. Produce persuasive and mission-driven multimedia assets for use across fundraising and communication platforms.
  • Manage multiple concurrent development and multimedia projects from concept through final delivery. Serve as a camera operator or fulfill other production roles on switched shoots, as assigned.
  • Partner with colleagues across academic units, donor and alumni relations, and other university departments to align Multimedia content with institutional marketing and fundraising goals. Contribute to initiatives that support aggressive fundraising targets, including comprehensive campaigns.
  • Maintain the Multimedia equipment room, including inventory tracking and routine maintenance. Set up, test, and troubleshoot video and audio equipment to ensure production readiness.
  • Upload, organize, and classify video clips and images within the internal office archive system and the Digital Asset Management (DAM) system to support efficient retrieval and long-term use.
  • Independently learn new software, tools, and production techniques to advance technical expertise. Assist with training and knowledge-sharing for subordinate or junior staff as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of departmental and university objectives.
