Job Summary: Provides strategic oversight, leadership, and management of all aspects of the nurse residency programs across multiple acute care hospitals. Responsible for designing, implementing, evaluating, and continuously improving nurse residency initiatives consistent with the ANCC Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP) standards, which support Magnet hospital standards, organizational objectives, and evidence-based best practices. Consistently exercises discretion and independent judgment in developing educational frameworks, assessing program effectiveness, and making data-driven decisions that impact nurse retention, competency development, and professional growth. Facilitates and supervises the collaboration among clinical service line leaders and new graduate registered nurses, clinical educators, and hospital administration to ensure excellence in residency training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience: Required
  • Five years' nursing experince with three years' nursing education: Required
  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in state of practice: Required
  • Hospital Fire and Life Safety (HLFS): Required

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in nursing: Preferred
  • Experience in ANCC PTAP program accreditation: Preferred
  • Experience in Magnet-designated hospitals: Preferred
  • Certification in Nursing Professional Development (NPD-BC) or Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE): Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develops, implements, and continuously improves the nurse residency program to support new graduate nurses in their transition to professional practice.
  • Establishes program goals, policies, and evaluation metrics in alignment with ANCC PTAP standards, Magnet requirements and organizational priorities.
  • Exercises discretion and independent judgment in curriculum development, program design, and the selection of training methodologies.
  • Leads strategic planning efforts to enhance program effectiveness, retention rates, and professional growth opportunities for nurse residents.
  • Analyzes workforce trends and makes data-driven recommendations to hospital leaders and executives on residency program improvements and expansion.
  • Serves as the primary liaison with hospital leadership, regulatory bodies, and accrediting organizations regarding residency program compliance.
  • Supervises program facilitators, preceptors, and clinical educators involved in nurse residency training across the hospital network.
  • Provides guidance, training, and evaluation of residency program staff to ensure adherence to best practices and organizational standards.
  • Oversees the onboarding, mentoring, and professional development of new graduate nurses within the residency program.
  • Develops and enforces policies related to performance standards, program participation, and competency benchmarks.
  • Designs evidence-based curriculum and educational content that fosters critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and professional development.
  • Ensures that the residency program incorporates current evidence-based clinical best practice guidelines, as well as hospital-specific policies and protocols.
  • Develops and delivers educational workshops, seminars, and simulation training for nurse residents and preceptors.
  • Oversees the integration of interdisciplinary learning experiences to promote collaboration among nursing and healthcare teams.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of teaching strategies and residency experiences through qualitative and quantitative assessments.
  • Ensures residency program compliance with the state Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) requirements, ANCC PTAP guidelines, Magnet requirements and other accreditation standards.
  • Oversees program audits, data collection, and reporting to meet regulatory and organizational requirements.
  • Implements continuous quality improvement initiatives based on program outcomes, participant feedback, and industry best practices.
  • Develops policies and procedures to maintain accreditation readiness and uphold professional standards in nursing education.
  • Manages the program budget, including allocation of resources, financial planning, and approval of expenditures.
  • Coordinates contracts with external training providers, speakers, and residency program vendors.
  • Makes independent decisions on resource allocation, staffing needs, and program expenditures to maximize efficiency.
  • Prepares executive reports on residency program performance, retention metrics, and strategic initiatives for hospital leadership.
  • Serves as a key advisor to nursing leadership on workforce development, nurse retention, and residency program outcomes.
  • Represents the hospital network in regional and national nursing education forums, sharing best practices and innovative residency models.
  • Collaborates with academic institutions to establish pipeline programs for new graduate nurses and ancillary clinical roles.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships with professional nursing organizations to enhance residency program credibility and impact.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
