About The Position

To supervise Maryland Authorized Inspection Stations to ensure conformance to designated rules, regulations and procedures governing the safety inspection of vehicles in the State of Maryland. Provides guidance and keeps inspection station personnel informed of new policies and procedures that affect the inspection program.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
  • Six months of experience performing mechanical repair, maintenance or inspection of motor vehicles.
  • Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require theoperation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  • In accordance with Public Safety Article, Title 2. Department of State Police, Section 2-204 (b)(6) of the Annotated Code of Maryland, candidates for positions in this classification will be subject to an initial drug screening, a physical examination and a complete criminal background investigation, to include a polygraph examination, before permanent appointment can be made. A criminal conviction may be grounds for rejection of the candidate.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts monthly audits of inspection stations' records and completes an examination of their inspection equipment to ensure compliance with designated rules, regulations and procedures governing the inspection of vehicles in the State of Maryland
  • Checks monthly for proper posting of the licenses, procedures chart, inspection station signs and mechanics' lists. Ensures that the aforementioned is visible to the public and current.
  • Assures that all inspection equipment is current and in working condition. Verify that the monthly calibration chart is initialed and kept up to date.
  • Check to ensure that all paper work is properly completed and contains the required information. Verifies the accuracy of the information. Verifies that all inspection certificates are accounted for and have been issued in numerical sequence.
  • Issues inspection certificates to authorized personnel. Ensures that proper security measures are in place to secure the certificates.
  • Checks personnel to ensure that all listed supervisors, controllers, and inspection mechanics are still employed and the inspection mechanic is qualified to inspect the class of vehicle for which the station is licensed.
  • Check the Safety Equipment Repair Orders (SERO) that they are properly certified and in numerical order.
  • Take appropriate administrative/enforcement action for any deficiencies noted during the monthly audits. Conduct investigations and inquires and takes appropriate enforcement action for violations of rules, regulations, and procedures governing the inspection of vehicles in the State of Maryland. This would include covert or surveillance operations.
  • Performs as a Duty Officer at the main Headquarters in Glen Burnie and at assigned field offices by assisting the public and allied police agencies either in person or by phone with safety inspection related matters.
  • Administers the inspection mechanic's demonstrative ability test. This includes ensuring the mechanic's ability to read, use, calibrate and record required inspection equipment and properly perform a complete inspection.
  • Investigate initial inspection station and mechanic applications. Complete and submit computer generated Division reports including station diagram.
  • Administers and scores monthly written test and deposits check/money order received from personnel taking the test. Administer a written test to controllers/supervisors at inspection stations and complete required paperwork.
  • Conduct salvage inspections on vehicles that are presented Division Headquarters at Glen Burnie or other assigned areas.
  • Testify in court and prepare cases for court/administrative hearings concerning violation of rules, regulations, and procedures governing the safety inspection of vehicles in the State of Maryland.
  • Conduct, along with sworn supervision, post collision investigations to determine if there were defective components that will not pass inspection standards. Final determination could result in criminal or civil litigation.
  • Confiscates suspended vehicle registration plates flagged by the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) for failure to comply with the Safety Equipment Repair Order (SERO) and advises the vehicle owner of the procedures for clearing a tag suspension.
  • Perform other job-related duties, as requested.
