About The Position

The MSIM Student Success & Academic Advisor will provide academic advising and student support coaching for the Master of Science in Information Management (MSIM) program. The MSIM Student Success & Academic Advisor is one of three primary advisors to the Information School’s MSIM degree for students in our online and in-person modalities, all reporting to the Lead Academic Advisor. This position collaborates with the MSIM Program Team composed of the Program Chair, MSIM Assistant Director, and Program Coordinator to ensure student and program success. Additionally, this position coordinates with other iSchool program staff to support the Information School's joint student-facing activities. This position is expected to participate in iSchool communities of practice related to student support and advising to share best practices across our five degree programs. The MSIM Student Success & Academic Advisor will work closely with faculty, staff, students, as well as prospective students, alumni and employers. In the iSchool, there is an expectation that all faculty and staff will step up where they see an opportunity to apply their special expertise or talents, speak up when they identify opportunities or concerns, and lead by taking actions that exemplify the iSchool’s core values. Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Information Management or related field.
Minimum of 3 years’ experience in student counseling or mentoring.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Must be able to work independently, as part of a team, and to lead others.
Must be able to communicate effectively in writing, verbally, and via technology.
Demonstrated success in working with diverse populations.

Nice To Haves

Advanced degree in Higher Education, Information Management or related field.
Experience in developing and administering programs for student recruitment, support and retention, study skills, personal and career counseling, and other academic assistance.
Experience using UW systems such as MyGradProgram (MGP), Slate, Student Database (SDB), and the BI Portal.
Experience working with international students.
Familiarity with fee-based programs and Continuum College.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including SharePoint and Teams.
Familiarity with Canvas or equivalent learning management systems.
Familiarity with video/web conferencing technology such as Zoom.

Responsibilities

Academic Advising for the MSIM Program (50%) Serve as an advisor/counselor on issues concerning degree progress and completion, with expertise on MSIM program degree tracks and modalities, iSchool policies and UW policies.
Advise students about complex program requirements based on when they enter, what program they are in, and requirements they have completed.
Learn and deploy a range of academic advising, communication, and support strategies to meet students’ academic needs, particularly those who are online vs. in-person, early-career vs. mid-career, and domestic vs. international.
Assess and support low performing students to support successful degree attainment.
Respond to student inquiries within 2 business days via email, phone, in-person, zoom, text, and online chat.
Keep MSIM students advised on financial resources available, including but not limited to scholarship and conference travel.
Manage retention messaging, on-leave, and reinstatement requests.
Create individual, revised plans of study when a student needs to take a leave from the program.
Assist MSIM students with completion of graduation processes, and related program and Graduate School policies and procedures.
Develop content for and maintain student handbooks and resources to provide 24/7 self-service information for students.
Develop and refine student communication plans throughout the academic year to ensure timely and engaging communications sent to students.
Administer the various MSIM email listservs, used to disseminate information to MSIM students.
Manage all aspects of the MSIM add code and registration processes for MSIM students, iSchool students, and non-iSchool students
Prepare paperwork and documentation for internships, such as curricular practical training letters.
Provide input on curriculum and course scheduling to the MSIM Assistant Director.
Support the communication of program changes, policy or procedures to appropriate stakeholders.
Keep informed of resources both on and off campus to assist MSIM students in their academic and personal pursuits.
Collaborate with UW offices as needed including International Student Services, the Graduate School, the Office of Disability Resources for Students, and Continuum College.
Participate in student conduct proceedings, if requested.
Other duties as assigned by the Lead Academic Advisor.
Student Success Support for the MSIM Program (20%) Counsel MSIM students experiencing academic difficulty, regarding options and resources to improve student retention.
Refer students as necessary to appropriate campus or community resources.
Learn and deploy student success strategies and theories, aiding students in time management, focus areas, studying styles, etc. to support degree completion and student development.
Support students through intentional coaching and mentoring as they navigate various new experiences and challenges as a part of graduate student life and coursework.
Oversee Virtual Student Community in MS Teams.
Work with student organizations (e.g., AIMS, ISACA, etc.) in matters of mutual interest and to enhance communication.
Collaborate with iSchool Career Services staff to develop career workshops and activities supporting the MSIM programs.
Encourage students to participate in activities and refer them to on- and off-campus resources.
Recruiting and Admissions Support for the MSIM Program (10%) Meet and advise potential MSIM applicants on the program and discipline as needed by the iSchool Admissions team.
Support content development and delivery for prospective student information sessions.
Participate in the MSIM Admissions Committee to admit qualified MSIM applicants.
Develop and consult on re-recruitment materials (emails, workshops, faculty speakers, etc.) to support admitted student re-recruitment from the bottom of the enrollment funnel through enrollment.
Work closely with the iSchool Admissions team and the Lead Academic Advisor to coordinate communications with incoming students and onboard new students.
Develop and deploy multiple asynchronous orientation courses in Canvas each year.
Event Support (15%) Create and deliver content for multiple orientation sessions delivered each year.
Develop virtual and in-person social, professional and educational content in partnership with iSchool staff, to meet the needs of incoming and enrolled students, including but not limited to community development, financial aid, etc.
Develop and run student success workshops related to time management, motivation, study strategies, goal setting, etc.
Host quarterly town halls in collaboration with the MSIM program team.
Schedule relevant academic information sessions for current MSIM students on topics such as internships, capstone or degree requirements.
Additional Responsibilities (5%) Attend and participate in team, committee, workgroup, iSchool, and/or University meetings to contribute to effective communication and collaboration.
Participate in and support team, iSchool, and University events, initiatives, and activities as needed.
Engage in ongoing professional development opportunities to remain current on industry standards, emerging trends, and technological advancements.
