About The Position

The Middle School History teacher is responsible for creating a supportive learning environment and an instructional program that helps students reach their potential and achieve academic success. This position includes responsibility for teaching 4 sections of History in core subjects that could include MS History, Geography, and Cultures and for advising a small group of 10-12 students. Reporting to the Head of Middle School and in support of the Department Chair, the Middle School History Teacher promotes high levels of learning in an engaging and effective manner using various teaching methods and curriculum resources for students in grades 5-8 . The Middle School History Teacher embraces and advances the principles set out in Kinkaid’s core documents: mission and core values , DEI commitment and strategic plan , Middle School Educational Philosophy , and the Portrait of a Teacher . The Kinkaid School is a co-educational, nonsectarian day school enrolling over 1,500 students in pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade. The student body is divided into the Lower School (PreK - 4th Grade), the Middle School (5th grade - 8 th grade) and the Upper School (9th grade - 12th grade). Located on a sixty-five-acre campus in the heart of Houston, Texas, the Kinkaid offers a thriving intellectual community in the midst of a vibrant, urban, and diverse culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in History or an academic discipline
  • A minimum of three years of experience teaching History, preferably to middle school students
  • Significant successful leadership experience in independent schools
  • Applied experience demonstrating knowledge of the developmental characteristics and research-based practices for effective instruction for middle school learners
  • An educational philosophy consistent with the mission of the School
  • Strong writing, speaking, and organizational skills

  • Masters degree preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement instructional plans, activities, and assessments that actively engage students in meaningful learning experiences
  • Work collaboratively with subject teaching partners, the Grade Level Team, the History Department, and administrators to foster a positive student learning experience
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with students, parents, and other professionals on a regular basis
  • Maintain an accurate record of student attendance and grades
  • Provide students with timely feedback and keep parents or guardians informed of students’ academic and social/emotional progress
  • Participate in grade-level team, department, and divisional faculty meetings
  • Assist in assessing changing curricular needs offering suggestions for improvement
  • Model professional and ethical standards when dealing with students, parents, peers, and the community
  • Set performance goals and engage in a cycle of professional growth and development.
  • Exemplify Kinkaid’s four core values of honesty, responsibility, respect, and kindness in interactions with all members of the community
  • Fulfill additional responsibilities as requested by the division head.
  • Additional responsibilities might include supervisory duties, serving on a school committee, coaching a sport, or leading a club, and are contingent upon the interest and skill set, as well as the School’s needs
