We are looking for a qualified Special Process Engineer to play a crucial role in ensuring efficiency is increased by eliminating waste and challenging status quo. The Special Process Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining the special process manufacturing methods of Welding, Brazing, Heat Treating, Thermal Spray Coatings, Chemical Film Coatings (Dry Film Lube), and Chemical Processing. They will prepare process instructions for shop routers requiring special process applications. Monitors the material and processing laboratory ensuring correct testing and quality specification requirements for manufactured products and raw material are met. Responsible for NADCAP compliance for all special processes. Performs special processes for internal and external audits.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 5 to 10 years of experience as an Engineer in Aerospace or Plating Companies.
  • Familiarity with a diverse range of materials (i.e. aluminum alloys, stainless steel alloys, engineering polymers, composites, etc.), and related coating processes necessary.
  • Proven ability to: trouble-shoot defects, process errors, and time consumption/ learning curve issues to improve shop floor performance.
  • Read and understand Commercial, FAA, EASA, Repair Station, and ISO documentations.
  • Must be proficient in navigating CMMs and understanding the differences between CoC/FAA 8130 requirements.
  • Read and understand all contract terms, conditions, clauses and stipulations and monitor them for compliance by both Piedmont and the US Government.
  • Maintain highest level of integrity, professionalism, and confidence of sensitive information with customers, vendors, visitors and business associates.
  • Maintain compliance with AS9110, FAA, EASA, EH&S & ITAR standards at all times.

Nice To Haves

  • FAA Airframe and/or Power Plant license or equivalent certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides technical support to Process Engineering and Manufacturing in the areas of Welding, Brazing, Heat Treating, Thermal Spray Coatings, Chemical Film. Coatings, Non-Conventional Machining (Laser), and Chemical Processing. Prepare documentation to meet the qualification/certification requirements of NADCAP and our customers in these areas.
  • Writes procedures to control all aspects of processing of material throughout the manufacturing process to ensure the quality of the products manufactured. Required to prepare process work instructions for shop routers.
  • Maintains current knowledge of new developments, materials, or processes for use in adaptations to company products.
  • Perform internal audits for preparation to NADCAP / ISO 9001 and AS 9100. Completes NADCAP pre-audit documentation and manages corrective action implementation of any identified audit findings.
  • Maintains reports, records, and production documentation to reflect schedules and performance both inter‑department and company-wide using statistical process methods and other established procedures.
  • Supports the Materials and Processing laboratory in the areas of training or assistance concerning Chemical Processing, Heat Treatment, Thermal Spray Coatings, metallurgical and/or materials joining problems.
  • Interfaces with the customer, NADCAP, and uses their corresponding websites on technical topics concerning NACAP requirements and customer hardware.
  • Establishes and executes research and development projects in the areas of welding, brazing, and processing of materials for future jobs.
  • Responsible for the development and qualification of thermal spray coating systems. This includes training and certification of thermal spray operators.
  • Determines, justifies, and presents to management the need for capital equipment for manufacturing and testing of the products.
  • Responsible for the evaluation and approval of outside vendors that could be considered special processes by the customers. (i.e., plating, peening, etc.)
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. May require training in hazardous material handling, dependent upon job assignment.
