About The Position

The Movement Teacher is a member of the Specials Team and collaborates closely with the PE Teacher. This position is responsible for creating a community of learners, curriculum planning and student assessment, program development and oversight, and professional growth and development. Lead specialist teachers manage a class of 18-24 students - support of classroom fellows is provided during Kindergarten and 1st grade classes. The Movement Specialist will support movement forms such as rhythm and dance, gymnastics, yoga, martial arts, individual, dual or team sports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • 1 + years as a teacher of record, preferably in physical education, health or movement to elementary aged students.
  • Advanced or native proficiency of English or Spanish
  • Experience in an urban school setting
  • Strong written, oral and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to be an independent solutions-oriented problem-solver

Responsibilities

  • Build a classroom culture that demonstrates the principles of biliteracy, sustainability, authentic inquiry, and Habits of Community Stewardship
  • Embody the Responsive Classroom philosophy for creating a community of learners and managing the classroom
  • Embrace and foster inclusion in the classroom and upholding high expectations for all students
  • Lead instruction for an entire class of students in K-5th grades
  • Utilize a workshop model to differentiate instruction and promote student engagement
  • Design developmentally appropriate curriculum maps to sequence the teaching of content
  • Regularly assess student progress against health and fitness standards - i.e. health related fitness, motor skills, how to be and stay active outside of class, sportsmanship - and using data to plan for instruction
  • Work cooperatively with physical education teacher in planning a balanced physical education program
  • Provide appropriate safety instruction and making safety checks on equipment and spaces used for movement classes to ensure overall student safety
  • Actively engage parents and families in their students’ academic success
  • Contribute to the productivity of the school as a whole
  • Work with special education teachers and service providers to plan for and support individual student needs and ensure progress toward outcomes
  • Work with an instructional coach to improve teaching practice
  • Share accountability for personal and collective learning through such examples as: shared facilitation of opening circles, rotating leadership of specialist team meetings, etc.
  • Maintain and organize relevant equipment
  • Attend and participate in weekly Specialist Lead Teacher team meetings
  • Support school safety by assisting with student arrival and dismissal procedures
  • Participate in school events outside of regular school hours (i.e. Learning Expos, open houses, etc.)
  • Teach in Mundo Verde’s summer program for an additional stipend
  • Other duties as assigned
