About The Position

We are seeking an Engineering Group Manager to lead the Motorsports Full‑Vehicle Dynamometer Lab at the Charlotte Technical Center (CTC). In this leadership role, you will set the operational vision for the lab and build a high‑performing, safety‑first team of engineers and technicians to operate, maintain, and continuously upgrade the facility. You will serve as the primary technical and operational interface to internal stakeholders and external race team partners by clearly communicating capabilities, aligning on priorities, and enabling business growth while fostering a culture of collaboration, disciplined issue resolution, transparency, adaptability, and inclusion.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or related STEM discipline)
  • 10+ years of experience in a powertrain lab, test facility operations, or manufacturing environment with direct accountability for safety, quality, delivery, and cost
  • Demonstrated success leading fast-paced, high-visibility programs with multiple stakeholders and shifting priorities
  • Proven people leadership experience: coaching performance, developing talent, and building inclusive teams
  • Ability to independently lead multiple complex workstreams with high autonomy and accountability for results
  • 10+ years of experience in fundamental engine and/or vehicle testing and development, including test planning, execution, and data interpretation
  • Understanding of motorsports development cycles and the urgency, confidentiality, and execution rigor required for racing programs
  • Working knowledge of material management processes (planning, procurement flow, inventory control, and outside services)
  • DFSS Black Belt (current GM employees)
  • Working knowledge of sensors and instrumentation, including network/communication strategies (CAN, LIN, SENT)
  • Experience with dynamometer testing systems and infrastructure (data acquisition, system controls, and facility controls)

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of machining operations and equipment
  • Experience with performance/racing engine build, teardown, and machining processes
  • AVL test system experience (e.g., PUMA, Concerto, IndiCom, EMCON)
  • Racing engine management system design, calibration, and troubleshooting experience
  • Advanced sensors/instrumentation expertise, including networks/communications (CAN, LIN, SENT)
  • Master’s degree in Engineering and/or MBA

Responsibilities

  • Set and model a positive safety culture aligned to GM core values (“It’s Personal” and “Return People Home Safely, Every Person, Every Site, Every Day”), ensuring compliance, risk mitigation, and accountability across all operations
  • Own the overall lab operating model (people, process, technology) to deliver safe execution, high data quality, high up time, and predictable throughput
  • Align test strategy, standards, and lessons learned with Performance and Racing leadership to continuously improve methods, tooling, and end‑to-end test processes
  • Lead, coach, and develop a diverse team; build capability plans, succession pipelines, and a performance culture with clear expectations and continuous feedback
  • Own the operating budget and resource plan (labor, travel, materials, outside services, and capital needs); manage spend, forecasts, and trade studies to meet business commitments
  • Oversee process development, equipment installation/commissioning, and program execution; establish robust governance to produce high‑quality, repeatable data
  • Partner with GM Motorsports Competition and race‑team customers to define requirements, manage schedules, resolve priority conflicts, and deliver exceptional customer experience
  • Ensure all commitments are delivered on time and to the highest quality; define and track KPIs (safety, uptime, throughput, data quality, and cost) and drive corrective actions
  • Create closed‑loop learning with Manufacturing/Production and other labs to share best practices, standard work, and problem-solving methods in both directions
  • Champion workplace organization and visual management (e.g., 5S/lean practices) in partnership with Powertrain to improve safety, efficiency, and customer-ready presentation
  • Represent Performance and Racing at the CTC Plant Safety Review Board and on the Emergency Response Team; ensure lab readiness, training, and audits are sustained
  • Partner with the Safety organization to implement best-in-class operating procedures, incorporating lessons learned across GM lab sites and industry standards
  • Own preventative maintenance, calibration, and configuration management to protect data integrity and maximize facility uptime
  • Forecast demand across current and future programs; ensure staffing and skills are in place (hiring, contracting, and development) in partnership with Performance and Racing leadership
  • Translate business goals into clear, prioritized deliverables and execution plans; remove barriers, escalate appropriately, and drive alignment across stakeholders
  • Model and reinforce GM leadership behaviors of integrity, inclusion, and accountability while creating a workplace of choice for high-performing technical talent
